Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

[Open! And listening to Simon and Garfunkel.]

"Jono? I have a couple questions," Scully said when she was taking a break from her studying. One was more of an excuse than a question, but... "If you're not too busy."

When I think back on all the crap I've learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
Though my lack of education hasn't hurt me much
I can read the writings on the walls

Scully gave that book a perturbed look.

That put a smile on Scully's face again, and she said, "First, Russian. Do we have books on tape? It just occurred to me that it might be easier to learn this if I had, oh... downloads? Or CD's of the language, that I could take with me when I'm exercising or on the run." She frowned and tried to hoist herself up on the counter to see what was making that godawful noise that wasn't Art & Paul.

Scully plopped down, face in a frown of concentration as she said, "That's not Simon & Garfunkel unless they got back together and did a great deal of very bad drugs after 1999."

Scully made a disgruntled face at the mention of Holmes. "Why on earth didn't he leave it there?" She shook her head. "I suppose he thought it was 'interesting.' I find most modern teenage pop music likely to induce a diabetic attack."

Scully, you are a teenager. "...unlike 90's music."

Right.

"It's very strange to be a decade in the future, and find all the music and television and movies changed, as well as the current events," Scully had to agree. "And the technology. It's all-- surreal. The bands that broke up, or someone died, or became very very strange." She shook her head. "I didn't expect to even notice that, not being a musician, but it's everywhere. It's not the same, getting it from an album collection." She hadn't even known she was homesick like that until now... "Anyway. I'm appalled at Professor Holmes's taste." Not that she expected him to have any.

"That he is." Snort.

"And no, it isn't. I've resisted, looking up what I might do, or where I might be in 2010, using the internet." Schrodinger's cat could stay a cloud of electrons from Scully's point of view. "I have to go back and live it; and anything I looked up-- how would I even know if it was true? It's bad enough that I'll be expecting the Red Sox to win the World Series. Especially if they don't."

Scully smiled sideways. "Except for the Canadian there." She mock-shuddered. "The other question I had...." Scully turned red, and looked sheepish. "I feel stupid even asking, but." She steeled herself. "Are there books on how to break magic spells?"

Even redder. Clearing of throat. Steeling of spine, yes.

"Do you know where there are books. With." Siiiigh. So embarrassing to even look for this, even though it was long past time. "Information on alleviating. Spells."

She so should have asked the Librarian, but then it would have become even more complicated, so.... "I'd consider it a curse, yes. Well. A wish. That someone made to a djinnayah." Scully stood even more straight, the way she did when facing down Skinner over some ridiculous thing Mulder had done. The way she had over *this*, in fact. "Unfortunately, she can't be located at this time."

The suspect fled the jurisdiction. Put out an APB.

"The djinnayah. She was in a carpet, apparently. Not a lamp or bottle like the legends mention. And since that's gone missing, well..." Scully made a face. "The person who made the wish is still around and very, very sorry."

Her shoulders slumped a little, and she let out a Scully-sized sigh. "Thanks. I've been resisting the idea that magic caused what happened for so long, but somehow, over the last five months, I've -- had to accept it." Her mouth turned down in glumness. "I should go by there anyway, I need to talk to Dru, maybe she'll know how to help." She studied Jono, biting her lip, wanting to ask how he did deal with... whatever happened to him. Without sharing her predicament, it would be beyond rude, though.

Scully would have sympathized entirely, while being aware that in some ways she was very fortunate... although that didn't take the sting of loss out of her own case, either. Hopefully, she'd regain what she lost. It would never be as severe as Jono's situation.

She was now giving the books an untrusting look of betrayal. First they sang, now they were going to mislead her? Unfair, books. When had she ever let you down?

"That's the last thing I'd want." She might end up five years old, or worse. "Okay. Thank you, Jono." She looked thoughtful. "I appreciate the help."
