Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

[Open! And listening to Simon and Garfunkel.]

"I had heard of him bothering you on the radio," Raven admitted. Stupid inability to lie. "And I wished to know why and to ask him to stop." She did! Nicely even!

//Oh...// And here was Jono, once again faced with that weird awkwardness that he felt whenever people went out of their way to stand up for him. //Well... Then... thank you.//

He wasn't even going to mention that the last time someone had tried to talk to Sherlock on his behalf, the bloody berk came in and accused him of not being man enough to fight his own battles.

He was kind of all warm and fuzzy inside because of the attempt.

Well. Warmer inside than usual.

Raven was always pleased to create warm fuzzies! And if Sherlock tried to come in and accuse Jono again, she just might make him feel some cold pricklies.

"He is a very foolish man," she said, "for he believes the students are all idiots, when he truly has no idea of just what they are capable of," she said. "I told him he was very ignorant and hoped that he might one day realize the error of his ways." She wasn't going to hold her breath, though.

One of Jono's eyebrows twitched up at that, yes.

//Well, I suppose it's always good to keep an optimistic attitude about you...//

Which was something that he, personally, was horrible at. And so it was good to know that there were people like Raven around who were more than capable of being champions for the cause.

//He might be ignorant about th'way our heads work, luv, but he is very good at what it is he does. Right up until I met him, he was a bit of a hero of mine, actually.// Or, well, a Sherlock had been. Either way, now Jono kind of just wanted to punch him in the teeth. //I suppose his is a genius best appreciated within th'pages of biographies, as opposed to in person, as such.//

He fidgeted for a moment, and then added, //I'm sorry you had to put up with his gobshite on my account.//

"You do not have to apologize," Raven said. "It was my decision to speak to him, for I do not enjoy hearing about my friends being harassed." And Holmes could take his insight into her motivations and...stick it somewhere else.

"But that is not why I came to visit you," she went on. "I actually was looking for some books, and I had a question for you as well. Oh, and something else I wished to tell you." That being how Ariel had talked her into joining the Glee Club.

//Books, I can help with,// Jono replied, thankful for the topic change. //Questions, I can attempt to answer. And if you have something to tell me, I'm all ears, Sunshine.//

Ah, Ariel. Continuing to be a force of nature, one Glee Club draftee at a time.

"I went to the club fair on Friday," Raven explained, deciding to start there. "I thought perhaps the Glee Club was dedicated to the emotion of happiness, so of course I was very interested in it. Ariel explained to me that it was about music, and though I have little experience with singing or dancing, she was able to convince me to join."

//Oh, good, somebody else in it that I'll know,// Jono mused. //She tracked me down at work last week and convinced me of th'same.//

Because Jono was a complete pushover with soft, squishy insides.

//... I'm hoping that I can get away with sitting on th'sidelines with my guitar. I can't sing. And I won't dance.//

That wouldn't last long.

"Somehow I am not entirely surprised," Raven said with a delighted smile, meaning both that Jono had joined and that Ariel had convinced others to do so. "I am nervous about having to sing, but Ariel has promised to help teach me. I am fascinated by the emotion that lies beyond music."

Oh, yes, touch on Jono's little obsessive points, Raven. Now he was lighting up a bit, pushing off from the desk and shoving his hands into his pockets.

//And so much of it. A song can take a person back to a moment or an experience far more effectively than a taste or a smell can, I think. If you smell a tree, you'll think of trees, but a song can throw you back years ago, to a first kiss, or a victory at sports, or any one of a million things...//

"That is exactly what I wish to learn," Raven said. "I shied away from music when I first came here before I was still denying my emotions, but there is no reason to do so now. And you have helped show me this is another world that I wish to explore." Her expression grew a little nervous, but her smile didn't fade. "I just hope I do not embarrass myself."

//Really, now, luv. I can't imagine you embarrassing yerself anymore than I will. Glee club is for singers, primarily, I think.//

And Jono was... effectively mute.

//Th'point is to have fun, in any case. And if you'd like somebody to practise with on days when there aren't any meetings, then by all means, Sunshine, come and find me. If nothing else, I can play along.//

... With his guitar. He didn't mean that he was going to pretend to like her singing or anything.

"But singers need music, and you are so wonderful at providing that," Raven pointed out. "And I would be grateful to practice with you." If she didn't horribly embarrass herself on her first attempt and refuse to ever sing again.

//You know I'm going to hold you to that, luv,// Jono replied, leaning forward a little and lifting his eyebrows pointedly. //I'm going to need somebody to rehearse with as well, after all.//

... Well, not much. But he was a sneaky, sneaky man when it came to getting nervous first-timers up onto the stage.

Or perhaps the better word for him was 'underhanded.'

In this case, Raven certainly wouldn't mind any underhandedness!

"I must choose my song now for the first meeting," she said thoughtfully. "I have been looking at videos on YouTube trying to find one that speaks to me."

//And have you had any luck yet?//

She better know that he was about to leap to the challenge. And not just because he'd take any excuse in the world to broaden his musical horizons, either.

"I have selected a few possibilities," Raven said. "There is one that I have been drawn to, particularly because the woman who is singing is not entirely dislike me, and in the video she transforms herself into a flock of ravens." Which she'd freely admit wasn't a reason to choose a song, but it made her happy.

//Ravens, mm?// Jono couldn't deny there was definitely a happy similarity going on there, wasn't there? //Perhaps I know th'song, luv. I have to admit, I haven't seen many videos lately. MTV doesn't seem to believe in them anymore.//

Damn them. Blasphemers.

"It was made in the year 1998, I believe," Raven said. "By a woman called Madonna." No, it wasn't "Like a Virgin," thankfully. That would just be silly!

//Ah, there's th'problem. I'm from '95.// He tilted his head, thinking that over anyhow. What songs came out in '98? Sadly, he hadn't brushed up on his Madonna as well as he probably should have since coming here.

//Ray of Light album, at least. Yer going to have to help me along with th'song, I think.//

Curse his brain for not being the be-all and end-all of musical repositories on the island.

Frozen, Jono. Frozen.

"Frozen," Raven confirmed. "I like the song very much, probably because looking back I see how I could have been described as 'frozen' before I allowed myself to start feeling things."

//Yer heart's a bit more open now, is it?// Jono thought on that for a bit, trying to pick out the lyrics in his head.

Really, it was a good Raven song, wasn't it?

//If you have any time on Tuesday to stop by Groovy Tunes, I'd be happy to help you iron out whatever troubles you might be worried about, for it,// he offered. //I'll bring my guitar.//

He always brought his guitar. But he'd bring it special for Raven, this time.

"I will have time before I go to work as well," Raven said, pleased for an excuse to visit the store. "I have one class in the morning, and I visit Professor Skywalker before that, but between then and late afternoon I am free."

//Well, if you have time around noon, I ought to be about,// Jono replied. //I knock off a bit of time in myself for class third period, but working around that shouldn't be too difficult, I should think.//

"Very well, noon," Raven said. "I will be there. Oh, and there was something else I wished to ask you." She was very excited about the idea she and Jaime had come up with in class. "Jaime and I have begun to discuss a trip to London. Would you be interested in going as well?"
