Henry never went back to his apartment Saturday night; the couch in his office was a perfectly decent place to sleep.

And, when he looked out the window and saw some of the things across the landscape, he was pretty sure he'd made the right choice. There were pterodactyls out there.

After making what he suspected would be the first of many pots of coffee, Henry set up the research tables with the books that seemed like they'd been most useful the day before, then settled down with some of the back library files about old invasions open in front of him. He wasn't sure if it'd teach him anything new, but it was something to do.

Zoe wasn't very good at research, but she was good at knowing where those who were good at research would be. If they found answers, she wanted to know, so she sat down at one of the tables and got Grace set up with some coloring books to keep her occupied. The fact that Grace wasn't attached to her was an improvement over yesterday, really.

"Principal Winchester?" Standing awkwardly next to the table clutching her notes, Karla realized this was probably the first time she'd ever spoken to the principal. "I'm Karla. I was one of the people who went down under the island last night."

Zoe tried to give Karla a stern look, but it only lasted for a moment. "Hello, Karla. Would you mind telling me what were you doing under the island last night? That wasn't exactly a safe decision to make."

Karla snorted. "With respect? But making dumb and unsafe decisions is kind of a standard of the student body, lady."

What? It was true!

"Right now, the only safe option is hiding under our beds and most of us aren't built for that. Going under the island might have been dangerous, but we got some useful intel out of it." She set her notes down in front of Zoe. "We're pretty sure we figure out what's wrong, if not entirely why or how."

After comparing her video of the device to Scully's blueprints, Hoshi approached Zoe.

"Principal Winchester? I went to get a closer look at the device yesterday and took some video. Now that I've compared it to the the blueprints, I think I've identified a piece that's missing, something called a 'portal thruster,'" said Hoshi, pulling up the 3D diagram on her data PADD. "There should be a lever right here, near the bottom, but it wasn't there when I took this image."

Zoe looked at the diagram, impressed by a student having such technology. "That seems like something important, doesn't it?" she said. "I mean, I imagine the device must need every piece to function."

"I think I have something for you," Anemone said, coming up to Zoe with some papers. "We've found some missing parts."

After last night, Jonas was still shaken but together. He made himself stay together. He'd seen the device, he had notes to wit and was now pouring over different notations on the blueprints of the machine.

When Karla wasn't out wandering the town, she was here, pouring over the notes she and Scully had taken last night. Staring at them wasn't making them any easier to figure out.

The machine itself hadn't been able to tell her much, and Anemone had been sorely tempted to tinker with it and install a compac drive so that she could hear it better, but she'd done lots of very detailed drawings of its parts.

She poured over the official blueprints. She knew machines and how they worked, what made them sing, which made it only a matter of time before she figured out what was missing.

After an hour or so she stopped, looked at her notes, looked at the blueprints, and then let her head thump on to the table. "We're all morons."

"What's that?" Henry asked, glancing up from his own reading. "If you need a break, you should go take one before your head explodes."

"I don't need a break," Anemone grumbled, rubbing at her eyes. "If I only had a brain."

"It's obvious," she continued, annoyed with herself for not seeing it earlier. "If you think about it, I mean."

"Fandom Island is a fulcrum, right? A place for the various realities to pivot around, intersecting all of them. But what keeps these realities from tipping more to one direction or another, and putting more weight on the island? What keeps the whole thing spinning without sending the other worlds out of wack?"

"'Quantum: the minimum unit of any physical entity involved in an interaction,'" she recited, tapping a sketch in her notebook, a section of the machinery that she'd drawn while laying on the floor yesterday. "The quantum balancer. The interactions are all wrong. The blueprints say it should be right here."

Sara had been going through the books herself, but found herself at quite a loss to make sense of the newfangled and otherworldly technological terms involved.

But this girl seemed to know what she was looking for -- so she hurried over with the drawing (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/5350634.html?thread=209320682#t209320682) she'd made last night in hand and a book, a bright pink Post-It note jutting from between the pages to mark her spot, under her arm.

"I'm afraid I can't make heads nor tails of what this ought to be," she admitted somewhat shamefacedly, "other than that --"

Her eyes fell on the blueprints, and she pointed at the corresponding section of the machinery, holding her drawing up beside it. "Yes, of course, there is something missing there!"

Hurriedly she flipped the book back open to the marked page. "I haven't the slightest clue what a 'dimension stabilizer' might be. D'you suppose it's important?"

"I would guess anything that's missing is important," Anemone agreed, looking at her sketch. "Especially any part with 'stabilizer' in the name. You've got a nice eye for detail with your lines."

Anemone's non-linear mind, ladies and gentlemen.

"Well, now we know that more than one piece is missing. That's not good."

Anakin--not that he would admit it--needed a break from whatever was marauding outside. After checking his messages and hearing from Karla, he headed to the library.

He...kind of looked like he'd been fighting monsters for the better part of two days.

"Master Skywalker?" Anemone approached him with her sketch book and a roll of blueprints. "Do you have a moment to go over something with me, before I get Principal Winchester's hopes up?"

When in doubt, ask the teacher that you are rather sure knows everything ever, at least, that was Anemone's motto.

Angela wasn't a fighting sort, and she was barely able to offer first aid backup, but she could read so she could research.

Not having Hannibal cling to when everything was falling apart wasn't something she'd had to deal with before. He'd been one of those constant things and with him gone... She couldn't think about that, and needed to throw herself into something. Books were as good as anything.

Scully was occupied with downloading and printing out photos of what she'd seen last night, arranging them on the blackboard so they were easy to look at. From all angles, the device looked incomprehensible to her, but as a whole, it did give an observer a good idea of what was there, and made it possible to compare it to blueprints.

"If it helps, I have some more pictures and even video from when I took a closer look at the machinery," Hoshi volunteered.

Scully looked up from her stack of photos. "That would be great," she said, looking interested. "I'd like to look at the video, to see if I've missed anything. I'm Scully, by the way."

As much as Alexander would have liked to have gotten a good sleep to be able to be mentally and physically able to do whatever might be thrown at them today, it was a terribly unrealistic expectation, but he was still at the library bright and early really, determined and ready to go, and really hoping more progress was made.

Armed with photos and video she took of the device yesterday, Hoshi was searching for information about the device itself. She remembered seeing some of the documentation of it a few years ago, but she just did not remember where to find it.
