Library, Saturday, August 7

Henry never went back to his apartment Saturday night; the couch in his office was a perfectly decent place to sleep.

And, when he looked out the window and saw some of the things across the landscape, he was pretty sure he'd made the right choice. There were pterodactyls out there.

After making what he suspected would be the first of many pots of coffee, Henry set up the research tables with the books that seemed like they'd been most useful the day before, then settled down with some of the back library files about old invasions open in front of him. He wasn't sure if it'd teach him anything new, but it was something to do.

"Earth, actually," said Hoshi, breaking into a smile. "They're standard issue in the year 2143, though the new iPad that hit the market a few months ago looks pretty similar. It only has a fraction of the computing power or memory storage that mine has, though."

"Ahh." Scully gave it a covetous look, then hesitantly touched it again, trying to get the screen picture to move and show another angle. "Did you notice anything in the mechanism that would give us a clue?"

"Not right away, but I wanted to compare this to the blueprints to see if my hunch was correct," said Hoshi, reaching over and tapping the screen twice. It zoomed in on a section near the bottom of the device.

"I went back and took a closer inspection of this area right here, because it almost looked like there was something missing," she added. "But I have no idea what's supposed to go there, or even if there's something that supposed to be there at all."

Scully looked at the photos, then at the prints, and asked, "Is there a way to overlay them, transparently, onto the photos? So the lines are visible, but we can see the mechanism through it?"

"Give me a second," said Hoshi, tapping the screen once more. She quickly scanned the photos on the blackboard as well as the blueprints. "Okay, this should take your photos and my video, and then match them up with the blueprints to give us a 3D approximation of the what the device should look like."

"Let's see it," Scully said, standing back and watching with concentration.

"Here we go," said Hoshi, sharing the screen with Scully as the PADD finished its calculations.

Her eyes widened a bit as the image appeared. "Doesn't it look like there's a lever missing here at the bottom, where the blueprints have that 'portal thruster' label? I know it's kind of hidden, but if I rotate the picture a bit, it should show up a little better." She tapped the screen again, and the picture rotated and zoomed in on the area she was pointing to.

Scully compared the rest of the overlay, with its connections and glowing white lines, to the portions beneath it, and had to nod, looking concerned. "It's definitely gone. You can see where it should be hooked in here--" Her finger traced the base, which was a gaping hole, and then pointed to the intact connections around it. "And where everything around it is still in place. How something could take that without taking out that whole console, I have no idea. But yes. Good eye."

"Normally it's my ears that catch the details, but it was a little difficult to get the machine to talk back," said Hoshi with a slight smirk. "I'd better take this to Principal Winchester. Thanks for sharing your blueprints and photos. I don't think I would have spotted it with just my video."

"You're welcome," Scully said, relieved. "I was just glad I could help here."
