Library [03/10]

Once the library was set up for the day, Sam planted himself at the desk with a notebook, and got back to writing down everything he could remember from the weekend. Sure, his dad had said there was nothing to worry about, but that was what he always said, like it ever had a chance of convincing Sam to leave everything in his dad's hands. If there was even the slightest chance that this whole destiny thing with Lucifer was true, he needed to be ready to stop it...or to make sure people like Dean and Peter knew what to do if he couldn't.

From listening to the radio, Raven knew that Sam hadn't been himself the past weekend (and she was upset with herself for not realizing it). She knew Sam would be in the library Wednesday, so after her class she went down to visit him and find out if he was all right and just who she had been talking to Saturday.

"Hello, Sam," she greeted him as she walked into the library.

"Raven, hi," Sam said, shutting his notebook to look at her. He wasn't sure whether to feel guilty that Lucifer had messed with her, or relieved that he hadn't tried to hurt her. Maybe he could do both at the same time. "I'm really glad to see you, I need to talk to you."

"Is it about what you said to me on the roof?" Raven asked. She was starting to feel relieved it had not been Sam, but she wasn't sure she wanted to know who it had been. "But that was not you, was it?"

"No, it wasn't me," Sam said, shaking his head. "I'm so, so sorry. I would never encourage you to do something with your abilities that you don't want, especially if it might hurt you in the end."

"I should have realized it was not truly you," Raven said, frowning. "But the arguments you -- he -- made were not entirely without merit. Who was he?"

"I still looked like myself, so you couldn't have known right away that it wasn't me," Sam said, shaking his head sharply. "Nothing he said had any merit, none at all. You shouldn't listen to any of it, just trust me." He wasn't sure if admitting who he'd been would make things better, or worse.

"He knew who I was," Raven said, looking down at her hands and playing with her rings. "What I was. How did he know that?"

Claire knew she should have checked in with Sam sooner after this weekend, but she just hadn't been able to.

She had coffee for him when she stopped by today though, just like always.

"Hey," she said. "How are you?"

Sam gave Claire a sheepish look as he set his notebook aside. "Um, not pure evil at the moment, so I guess that's an improvement," he said. "How are you?"

"Relieved that you're not evil," Claire said, handing him the cup of coffee. "I was kind of worried."

Where 'kind of' equaled 'extremely'.

Claire shrugged. "Figured there wasn't much he could do to hurt me, you know?"

"You sound way too much like Peter," Sam said. "I have no doubt that there's ways he could have hurt you that would have had nothing to do with physical pain."

Chuck might have subtly been avoiding Sam the last few days (and, wow, those were the times he regretted sharing every class with him) but he figured the subtle part would be thrown right out the window if he didn't show up in the library today.

It took him a while to come to this conclusion, which would explain why he was a bit later than usual bringing lunch. "Hey, Sam."

Sam had noticed the avoidance, but it wasn't like he could blame Chuck for not wanting to come near him. He was surprised to see Chuck in the library, but he certainly didn't mind. "Hey, Chuck. It's good to see you."

Chuck gave Sam a slight smile as he sat down. "Yeah, you too. Been kind of busy the last few days."

"The life of a business owner is never boring," Sam said, willing to accept the lie. "I take it you were okay this weekend? Not out of your mind or anything?"

"I was fine. I always seem to be fine during these things," Chuck noticed. He shrugged. "At least I didn't get stabbed this time around."

Ugh, paperwork. Henry finally set aside his stack of Roman history to deal with the mounting pile of papers in his office.
