Ethics [Thursday, November 12, 1st period]

Anakin stalked into the room precisely on time and shut the door firmly behind him. "Today we talk about wrath," he said. "There's something very human about giving in to our temper," he said. "It's freeing, uncomplicated."

He paused. "At least at that moment. The repercussions are always waiting."

He waved a hand and the holoprojector flipped to life. Frozen in time was a young Jedi with two lightsabers at the neck of an older, clearly defeated enemy. The students might remember the scenario from a few weeks ago.

"This was me," he said, pointing at the young man. "And that older man was evil and threatened my family. It didn't make the choice I made--to kill him while he knelt there--any less wrong."

He looked around the classroom making eye contact with every student before continuing. "Wrath is very, very tempting. It urges you to listen to that dark little voice inside of you--to cut loose, live without consequences."

He pointed at the holo again. "There are always consequences. This moment has stayed with me, made me the person I am. It wasn't a positive influence."

Anakin stopped pacing. "What would it take for you to get to that hazy edge? And more importantly, how do you stop yourself from giving in?"

Bobby was kind of surprised, actually. Killing someone was just not something he'd ever think of doing, that he kind of innocently assumed anyone else who wasn't the enemy would think the same way.

Elena wasn't. She couldn't fault him for it, either.

Katchoo? No, not surprised. Not judging for it, either.

Raven might've been surprised a few weeks ago, but not now. And she couldn't say she wouldn't have done something similar if her own family, the one she'd created in Fandom, was threatened.

Rose nodded. If he hadn't, she would have been more surprised. You don't have someone cornered like that then hesitate.

Azula wasn't surprised, she'd think less of Skywalker if he hadn't gone through with it.

Jonas didn't know what he was, honestly. He'd seen one person killed before, a complete innocent, and still found it difficult to know that he was connected in a way with someone else who'd killed.

Emma wasn't surprised, no, but she was a bit annoyed that he was acting like it was a bad thing.

Ellie never really thought about killing people or anyone else killing people, so she was a little bit surprised.

Karla sank back into her chair a little, thinking--thinking about the people she'd killed and those she hadn't. Four. She'd already killed four times.

"I will kill to protect those who are innocent," she said quietly. "And to collect the debt for those I could not protect. And I have been to the point. Several times."

Wow, that top of her desk sure was interesting.

"Freak, you murdered him!" the words rang through his head and he gave a little shudder at the memory. "I wouldn't kill someone," Bobby said, with the firm conviction of someone who'd been wrongly accused of doing just that. "But, I mean, if someone I cared about was threatened- I'd do just about anything to stop it. Up to that."

"I don't know," Kyle said flatly. "To both of those questions."

"Threats to my family," Elena said, firmly, and Rose at least would realize that she wasn't referring to her biological family, but the adopted one with black suits. "If I knew letting someone live would let them hurt one of my own, I don't know that I'd be able to pull back from the edge. I doubt I'd try."

It wasn't something Raven liked to think about, but....

"I have been there," she said quietly. "The first time I could not stop myself. The second time I did not try to kill, but what I did was still wrong, and I did not feel good about myself afterward."

Her admitting that would probably be a big surprise to anyone who didn't know what happened in the vampire-controlled Fandom or Briarwoods.

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you talking about killing anyone ever?" Rose asked. "Or just doing it out of temper?"

Because it made a difference even if her answer was still the same.

"Why would I stop myself if it was called for?" Katchoo asked a little too calmly (for her).

"Wrath can cloud judgment, yes, and it can be detrimental in a fight when you need clarity to win," Azula answered. "But I don't see what's wrong with killing your opponent. Perhaps you can refrain and then have him executed publicly to boost the moral of your people. Killing an enemy would help ensure they won't rise up again."

Spoken like a true sociopath.

To folks in class: this concept is pretty much how the Briarwood plot started. If it comes up, Karla will try to keep the details vague. If that can't be done, I'll put up a warning.

Hopefully that works for everything.
