Ethics [Thursday, November 12, 1st period]

Anakin stalked into the room precisely on time and shut the door firmly behind him. "Today we talk about wrath," he said. "There's something very human about giving in to our temper," he said. "It's freeing, uncomplicated."

He paused. "At least at that moment. The repercussions are always waiting."

He waved a hand and the holoprojector flipped to life. Frozen in time was a young Jedi with two lightsabers at the neck of an older, clearly defeated enemy. The students might remember the scenario from a few weeks ago.

"This was me," he said, pointing at the young man. "And that older man was evil and threatened my family. It didn't make the choice I made--to kill him while he knelt there--any less wrong."

He looked around the classroom making eye contact with every student before continuing. "Wrath is very, very tempting. It urges you to listen to that dark little voice inside of you--to cut loose, live without consequences."

He pointed at the holo again. "There are always consequences. This moment has stayed with me, made me the person I am. It wasn't a positive influence."

Anakin stopped pacing. "What would it take for you to get to that hazy edge? And more importantly, how do you stop yourself from giving in?"

"My people don't actually have any laws against murder," Karla said, waiting for the inevitable sounds of disbelief, "but we do have the belief that everything has a price. And if you kill someone, There is a price you might have pay for it. We call that 'the debt.' Anyone who has a stake in that debt can call it in. As a Queen, I have a stake in the lives of all of my people. Not every debt is called, but if you take a life, the possibility is always there."

"What if someone makes a mistake?" Elena asked. "I kill so-and-so because he killed my sister, and then I discover that he was innocent. Then his family can come after me, for my debt. Can't they?"

"Yes," Karla said simply. "You knew that was a risk when you decided to pursue your vendetta. And you did kill an innocent. They have every right to call in the debt."

She wrinkled her nose. "However, by this point, a good Village or Province Queen would probably have noticed and will take steps to prevent this from turning into an all-out blood feud. She may claim the debt herself, or try to find another way for you to pay without blood. The thing to remember is that people don't necessarily like killing. And that, though there are no laws forbidding it, there are consequences."

"No laws against murder?" Azula repeated. "Interesting. Although, it still seems to tie you up unnecessarily."

"Lives aren't cheap," Karla said. "Even if there are damn good reasons to kill and no question of hesitating over it, a life is still a life. It means something to that person, even if to no one else. That's why there is the concept of a debt."

"This is where your philosophy and mine part ways," Azula said.
