Ethics [Thursday, November 12, 1st period]

Anakin stalked into the room precisely on time and shut the door firmly behind him. "Today we talk about wrath," he said. "There's something very human about giving in to our temper," he said. "It's freeing, uncomplicated."

He paused. "At least at that moment. The repercussions are always waiting."

He waved a hand and the holoprojector flipped to life. Frozen in time was a young Jedi with two lightsabers at the neck of an older, clearly defeated enemy. The students might remember the scenario from a few weeks ago.

"This was me," he said, pointing at the young man. "And that older man was evil and threatened my family. It didn't make the choice I made--to kill him while he knelt there--any less wrong."

He looked around the classroom making eye contact with every student before continuing. "Wrath is very, very tempting. It urges you to listen to that dark little voice inside of you--to cut loose, live without consequences."

He pointed at the holo again. "There are always consequences. This moment has stayed with me, made me the person I am. It wasn't a positive influence."

Anakin stopped pacing. "What would it take for you to get to that hazy edge? And more importantly, how do you stop yourself from giving in?"

ShinRa had had its mech droids; she'd taken out several in training missions herself.

"And metal can't feel," she nodded. "Do the lines blur? Are there humans who've changed sides, or are there hybrids of some variety?"

Kyle's expression hardened. "Grays," he replied. "They're what we call humans who help the machines. Though they're not really human anymore when they betray their entire species. I'd probably kill one of them if it meant they couldn't help Skynet anymore." He didn't sound terribly confident about that. "And hybrids," he changed the subject. "There was one. He was different. He's gone now."

"Do you know why they've taken that side?" she asked. "If it's propaganda, maybe you could turn them. Have allies and not enemies."

"Skynet doesn't want to conquer us. It wants to kill all of us. They use the Grays to figure out how to do that fast and more efficiently. The Grays do it because they live better. They think by being on the side with the stronger firepower, they'll be left alone." He was only rattling off what he'd been told about the Grays. He didn't understand them.

"Maybe they're desperate," she said, in a quieter voice. "Someone who's going to starve to death today, and Skynet offers food, in exchange for selling out everyone else and dying later. It might seem like a decent trade."

Kyle gave a terse nod and shrugged. "It probably does. They're weak and wrong. They'll get what's coming to them."
