BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

The girl in the Doc Martens, cargo pants, and tank top who came strolling into the terminal looking bored had the handle of a large, expensive rolling suitcase in one hand and a lumpy-looking canvas duffel bag, the sort you'd get from an army surplus store, slung over her shoulder.

"This is it?" Her lips thinned. Her expression turned skeptical. More skeptical, rather, since it'd already been. "So far? Really not all that impressed."

It was partly an act. The part where she'd gotten to travel by portal had been kind of cool, even if Kennedy wasn't sure how easily she could accept that it was real and not some elaborate trick.

Kennedy immediately held up one hand and rolled her eyes. "Yeah, you know what? Don't. Just don't."

Kennedy shifted the duffel bag on her shoulder and something made a loud clinking noise inside. "So what, you just assume because I'm a girl, I need your help? Please."

She would not, however, deny the pretty part.

"Just because I'm pretty doesn't mean I'm helpless, got it?"

See?

Kennedy laughed, a very patronizing kind of sound. "Yeah, about that? If you think it's going to get you into my pants or something like that? Get over it. Eyes off the merchandise, buddy, this store doesn't cater to boys."

Cal couldn't help overhearing a comment like that, magnet for sarcasm that he was, and so he also couldn't help returning it with, "Well, what did you expect? Rainbows and sparkles and laser beams?"

"That would've been more of a welcoming party than this." Metal clinked against metal in the duffel bag on her shoulder when she gestured disdainfully with that arm. "Where's the giant banner and balloons? Fresh meat's usually a bigger deal. Although, lack of uniforms, that's a bonus."

"Oh, just wait until you get there," Cal said. "I bet there'll be glitter everywhere."

Kennedy's eyebrow crept toward her hairline. "Glitter. What, like a kindergarten art project?"

"Yeah," Cal said, nodding, "a kindergarten project gone berserk from too much speed, maybe."

Kennedy blew air out of the corner of her mouth in a disparaging little hiss. "Goodie. What, are we going to ride the short bus there too?"

She didn't have hair like Fiona but Jonas still found himself watching her, taking stock of movement, expressions and the bags she'd arrived with.

Thirteen years in the Community, three years in the Village and he still felt utterly out of place Elsewhere. Everything was so different.

"Hello," he said kindly, giving the girl a nod. "Why aren't you impressed?"

"Because nothing's happening," Kennedy said. "No big deal, nothing. Just a regular boring old airport terminal, nothing special about it."

"Airport terminal," he repeated, resisting the urge to write that down. "Was there supposed to be something special? There's a lot of people here. They're not special?"

Jonas was still in that 'everything is special' phase all things considered.

"Supposedly we are," Kennedy answered. Sure, not necessarily in a good way, if she went by Constance's description of the place. Problem students, her ass. "But I'm not really getting the impression they're treating us like it."

People here were exceptionally forward and direct. It was something he wasn't used to and the adjustments he already knew he was going to have to make were rolling around in his head.

The emotion was frustration though, that was evident. Frustration wasn't anger though and Jonas was glad of that.

"I'm sorry, I'm unfamiliar with how we're supposed to be treated," he said mildly, no trace of sarcasm in his voice. "What's...wrong with this?"

Kennedy was used to much fancier boarding schools than this one; that was where the frustration came from. Well. That and her own sense of entitlement. If it was a school that had a fighters reserve--that was the part she'd latched onto most, naturally--she'd been expecting more of a heroes' welcome.

Except he didn't look particularly heroic, and neither had the doofus who'd offered to help with her bags, or the guy who'd asked about rainbows and laser beams.

Thus, frustration squared.

"Nothing's wrong with it. I was just expecting more."

"Omigod how cute are those pants?" Kelly exclaimed in a squeal. "Like, totally cute. I have white ones like them!"

Except they also had rhinestones, and the pockets were clearly decorative. She was wearing them, you see.

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[identity profile] brat-intraining.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Kennedy had noticed the rhinestones. They were a little difficult not to. "Right," she said, wincing at the squeal. Her own pants were lumpy at the knee pockets with gum and crumpled-up receipts and a small bottle of holy water, because in 1999 the TSA didn't have a huge stick up its ass about carrying liquids around, and all of that was irrelevant with portal travel anyway. "Totally cute. You bet."

[identity profile] italksmack.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"I know, right," Kelly said eagerly. "It's a good look for you! Are those Doc Martens? My friend, at my old school? Was totally into those. But she liked Pearl Jam a lot too and that's not really my scene but I think it's totally flattering on you, 'cause you like, look like you could kick someone in the head but you won't, right?"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[identity profile] brat-intraining.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Not for no reason." So there, Constance. Kennedy was going to take that as a compliment, though, and straightened her shoulders a little, sticking one foot out. The Docs were pretty battered; it made her stepmother bitch about why Kennedy wanted to look like she couldn't afford decent shoes, and every time she did Kennedy'd just go out and find something to kick that would put a scuff or two more onto them. "But if I wanted to? Totally could."

"Oh my god, that is so cool. You're a badass," Kelly said, wide-eyed. "Like Bruce Willis. But a girl! And not looking like Bruce Willis? 'Cause he's like, old, and a man. And you're not either of those things!"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[identity profile] brat-intraining.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Psh. As if I'd want to be either of those things." This girl had gone from being mildly annoying to a bonus to the ego that really didn't need any stroking. Kennedy was totally a badass. She liked it when people recognized that.

(She was probably in for so much disappointment.)

"So. What's your deal? I mean, why'd you get sent here?"
