BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

Cal couldn't help overhearing a comment like that, magnet for sarcasm that he was, and so he also couldn't help returning it with, "Well, what did you expect? Rainbows and sparkles and laser beams?"

"That would've been more of a welcoming party than this." Metal clinked against metal in the duffel bag on her shoulder when she gestured disdainfully with that arm. "Where's the giant banner and balloons? Fresh meat's usually a bigger deal. Although, lack of uniforms, that's a bonus."

"Oh, just wait until you get there," Cal said. "I bet there'll be glitter everywhere."

Kennedy's eyebrow crept toward her hairline. "Glitter. What, like a kindergarten art project?"

"Yeah," Cal said, nodding, "a kindergarten project gone berserk from too much speed, maybe."

Kennedy blew air out of the corner of her mouth in a disparaging little hiss. "Goodie. What, are we going to ride the short bus there too?"

"Well, one of the chaperons is talking to his hamster; what do you think?"

"Talking. To his hamster." Kennedy's head swiveled in the direction of the giant bald guy with the purple tattoo thing on his face. "Okay, Constance told me this place was special. She just didn't say it was that kind of special!"

"It's...all kinds of special, really," Cal said with a sympathetic expression. "Cal Stephanides," he then offered. "I was here last year."

"Really not so reassuring," she muttered half to herself. "Kennedy. New kid. It's...kind of obvious, isn't it?"

"Well," Cal said, "it is the newbie shuttle."
