Library [05/13]

With workshops going on, there was nothing that could keep Sam out of the library now. He'd gotten away from his cabin early, and had both coffee and a bagel to keep him going through the morning. He wasn't sure if anyone would need the library so early in the term, but he was ready just in case.

Sam checked his e-mail and his favorite blogs and news sources, easing into the morning.

Thinking about the brand new students, Sam went through the stacks and came back out with an armful of books. One colorful sign later, there was a display of "Classic Books Every New Student Should Read" set up on a table.

Why yes, he was a complete geek sometimes.

It didn't take long before the table was missing a book - Sam had to have something to read himself, after all.

Fiona had come to the library for something else, but the sign caught her interest and she walked over to see what they might have.

She was hoping for reference material.

Sam looked up from his book and smiled when he saw he wasn't alone anymore. "Hi there," he said. "Can I help you?"

She looked up, a little startled but not enough to reach for her rubber band. She was getting better at that.

"I was looking for some fiction," she admitted, not quite sure what to look for beyond that. The whole genre stretched before her, an unknown and potentially treacherous landscape of books full of things that'd never happened, lacking facts. The concept was even a little creepy.

"But then I saw your sign. What makes these a necessity?"

"Most of these books are what people call classics," Sam said, looking over the ~~metaed~~ array of Shakespeare and Dickens and the like. "They're older and they've been read by a lot of people. I tossed a few modern books on too, mainly because they're popular too. I figured if people are new to this world, they might want to start with stuff that a lot of people have read, but there's a whole section of fiction books that you can look at too. Is there any particular kind you'd like to read?"

She shrugged.

"I don't really know. What is there?"

She'd been raised entirely without fiction, except for the one that her family had operated under for fifteen years that insisted that she and Eliot were completely normal and that the woman taking care of them was their Grandmother.

...cue horrified English majors in three, two--

Sam's eyes got a little wide, and he perked up. "Well there's...there's a ton, really. Uh, historical fiction, romance, mysteries, dramas, funny stories, animal stories...any interest you have, there's probably a book about it."

"What do you like?"

Which was less about pleasing him and more about finding something of decent quality. After all, he'd know the best books on the subject of things he enjoyed whereas he'd probably just pick the most well known for the other genres.

"I tend to like mysteries a lot, or dramatic stories," Sam said. "Mysteries are fun because you can try to figure out the ending before the characters in the book do." Not that he prided himself on being able to do that or anything.

"Do you know any good mystery books then?"

That sounded at least moderately useful.

Sam had cookies to share if Dean came by for lunch today.

Dean was indeed at his usual spot for days when Sammy had library duty. He paused when he came in and looked at the sign and pile of books.

"Geek," he told his brother as he sat down and tossed him his sandwich.

"You say that like it's a bad thing," Sam said, grinning as he passed Dean his cookies.

"You mean it's not?" Dean joked.

"Not to me. Not when it comes to books," Sam said. "It beat spending the morning being bored."

"Point," Dean admitted, opening his sandwich. "So... had a nice little talk with Claire yesterday..."

"Did she tell you about her situation?" Sam asked.

"Her being hiding under a new identity and Peter and Nathan being dead?" Dean nodded. "Was kinda the main thing we talked about."

Sam frowned at the mere mention of "Peter" and "dead" in the same sentence. "I promised her that her real identity would be safe. It shouldn't be too hard," he replied.
