Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #5

When the students arrived in class, they found a basket full of adorable, plush shapes just inside the doorway. Edward instructed each of them to grab the plushie of their choice when they came in.

Once the students were seated, Edward dimmed the lights and began. He used a slide show and talked about sexually transmitted diseases. He used a number of slides showing the effects of these diseases in full color.* He did mention the role of condoms in prevention, but he emphasized that abstinence was the only way to completely be safe.

When the lights came back up, he had one of each of the plushies in front of him. "These are my gift to you as a reminder of today's lesson. They are oversized representations of the microbes that cause some of the diseases we've discussed. The yellow is herpes, the pink is syphillis, the blue is gonorrhea, the black is HIV and the purple is the relatively mild mono."

"Now please find your fellow sufferers and we'll do a game of STD Roulette."

"And purple," she practically cooed.

Amber plucked up a card, raising her brows at Angela, "You want to read the fun fact?"

Yeah, this might be fun in a way that just might erase the picture slides from her mind. 'Cause ew.

Angela gestured for the card with a smirk.

"So, one in five of us has herpes," she announced after reading it. "Cheerful thought if ever there was one."

"Yah, fun isn't really so fun," she said, twisting her lips and reaching forward to twirl the spinner. "Oh, crabs. And not the kind you eat..."

Er, unless there's oral and oh my god gross!

"Fun fact: A person can get crabs during sexual contact with a person who has crabs." She snickered. "Ya think?"

"I heard you can also get them by sharing clothes and things," Angela added. "Which now I actually think about it... Ew."

"That's just nasty. I don't think I want to have sex. Ever."

...

Crap. Cal didn't have anything... did he? Naaaaahhhh, 'course he didn't.

"I wouldn't say that necessarily," Angela said, with the sort of knowing smirk you get from someone who knows what you're missing.

"Just make sure there's condoms and an STD check involved somewhere."

Amber caught that smirk and leaned towards Angela to whisper, "We just kind of mess around. Is an STD check necessary for that, you think?"

"Unless either of you have been doing hookers, I'd say you're probably safe," Angela replied. "But a check is never a bad idea anyway."

"Hookers? Like whores? Street corner prostitutes?"

"Like that," Angela confirmed.

"I'm getting the sense you're just not that kind of girl," she added with a grin. "And probably wouldn't date that kind of guy... or girl." Better to cover all bases here.

"Nah, I don't think I'm that kind of girl either. And I've got a boyfriend who I don't think is that kind of guy," she said thoughtfully. "Or maybe he is and is leading a double-secret-life that I don't know about. Hm." Amber glanced in Cal's ~~if he was there la~~ direction, wonderingly so.

"You know, I didn't think I would be having to look at nasty stuff when I signed up for this class. But I guess it's important, right?"

Angela chuckled, following her gaze. "I'm gonna go with 'no'," she decided. She didn't know Cal well, but her assessment of him hadn't included the phrase 'secret hooker addiction'.

"I don't really know how I ended up here, because the whole abstenance thing totally isn't in my life plan."

"It's really not in mine either. Loretta? My ma's cigarette smokin' booze buddy, she loves sex and tries to get it every chance she gets. Always looks happy when she does so I figure if it's got to be good for her? It should be ten times better for me." Amber's logic wasn't always sound.

Angela was quiet a moment as she tried to make sense of that little statement. It sounded like the fun kind of logic if it was true, at least.

"Does she have bad taste in men?" she asked eventually. It might be one reason.

"Loretta's taste is this: if he's got a dick, then he's doable."

"Wow." For all Angela was relatively flexible on these matters, she did have certain standards.

"Okay, that's how you end up with these," she said, holding up her plush mono virus. She probably wasn't talking about the cuddly version, though.

"Oh, my gosh, yah, I know it. Thankfully Loretta knows everyone in our trailer park."

Angela arched an eyebrow, "Knowing everyone helps her not catch things off them... so she knows the ones to avoid?"

"Yah, you betcha," Amber nodded. "So far everything's been a-okay."

"Comforting," Angela remarked with a little snicker. "But I think I'll stick with my slightly more selective method over that one."

"Oh, yah, Loretta'll never be a role model, that's for sure. But I love her."

"Do what they say, not as they do." Angela grinned and poked at the spinner again, before grabbing the relevant card.

"Syphilis makes you blind, crazy and can kill you..." she said after a few moments of reading. Okay, the card doesn't really say that, she's just summarising. "Lovely."

"Damn, that one sucks," she said, eyes a little wide.

"Let's keep fingers crossed we never run across it," Angela said.

"...and the boys we're with as well," she gave a little nod of her head, her grin more of a smirk.
