Ethics [Tuesday, September 9, 2nd period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I've been married twice. I've never been beaten in one-on-one lightsaber combat." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

"I don't like peanuts," Ender said. He didn't like this exercise, but it was easy enough. It was about really listening to what people said, and he'd learned that lesson a long time ago. It meant he could make some things sound ridiculous, though, and that suited him fine. "One of my friends back home was called Bean. I've led an army and never lost a battle."

Jan pawed the floor, trying to think of something. His people might keep a secret from another, but to deliberately tell an untruth was very rare. Unicorns really didn't lie. "I can jump higher than the wall around the school grounds, I can make art, and I don't remember anything before I arrived on this island." They also weren't very good at it.

Ella lied by omission almost every day of her life. She was good at this game. "I've been to a giants' wedding," she began. "My best subject in school is music. My full first name is Eleanor."

"I once helped rescue a former teacher...twice, my best friend never wears a shirt and I discovered the that library is fun for more things than just checking out books," he said, just throwing that one out there.

Agnes bit her lip and thought for a moment. Quite a few hard-to-believe things had happened to her...

"The cottage I live in, back home, is the same one our Queen used to live in," she began. "I've flown around my entire country in a single night. And I've sung the lead in the most prestigious opera on the Disc."

"My first name means 'lily flower.' I hate crowds, and I'm a natural blonde," Dōjima said, looking down at her desk. Great. This was exactly the class she didn't want to be in today. Why couldn't Skywalker have started with some other topic?

Harvey hated lying, which wasn't exactly the best trait for a future politician to have. But just because he didn't like lying didn't mean he wasn't any good at it.

"I'm allergic to chocolate, which sucks. The circus freaks me out," he said. "And I can roll a coin across my knuckles really fast."

Telling lies wasn't something Firekeeper had much experience with, since it wasn't something wolves bothered with. It was sort of pointless when the person you were lying to can tell this with a sniff of your scent. It was only after she'd started to live among humans that she'd discovered lying.

"I am wolf, I enjoy travel by boat, I runned in places humans is forbidden from," she said with a shrug, leaning back in her chair and dangling one hand down to scratch between Blind Seer's ears.

Tahiri didn't think anyone besides Master Skywalker would be able to tell when she was lying, but just to be sure she made an attempt at putting up a mental block before she spoke.

"I go barefoot because I like the feeling of the ground under my feet," she began, the diagonal scars on her forehead puckering slightly from her thoughtful expression. "I've never been captured in battle, and when I was nine years old I had to survive for a week in the Jundland Wastes of Tatooine, or my adoptive father would've been executed."

"I can speak in ten different languages. I have a twin sister. And I play the piano," she said, speaking rather quickly because even though lying wasn't that difficult, she was sure her eyes spoke volumes, giving her lie away easily.

Dressed for class, it was up to Toby's hair to bring the glisten to his day. "Umm, my best friend's lie was totally about me, I know Kung Fu, and my dream is to be a chef."

"Um." Molly had never really lied because anyone wanted her to before. She tried to keep her face from giving away the lie "I once may have turned myself invisible. My mom and dad met when he saved her from a dragon. I'm the oldest of five."
