Ethics [Tuesday, September 9, 2nd period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I've been married twice. I've never been beaten in one-on-one lightsaber combat." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

This was a pointless exercise. Everyone lied; he knew that. That lies were sometimes easier to work with than truths. But this was yet another one of the stupid assignments this school provided, and so he considered Anakin, and thought about last week.

Everyone earned their nicknames in the war. 'Hero Without Fear' sounded like a story, like something they could've used, and so it was likely. He knew nothing of Skywalker's marital status, so that was possible.

But he thought. About his own words, and Skywalker's reaction to them. In the end, someone's also going to be better than you, he'd said, and Skywalker had reacted. And how old was he...?

If anyone knew about losing, it was him. "You've been beaten in combat," he said, finally.

Ender was quiet.

He was listening. Dully.

"I don't like peanuts," Ender said. He didn't like this exercise, but it was easy enough. It was about really listening to what people said, and he'd learned that lesson a long time ago. It meant he could make some things sound ridiculous, though, and that suited him fine. "One of my friends back home was called Bean. I've led an army and never lost a battle."

Jan pawed the floor, trying to think of something. His people might keep a secret from another, but to deliberately tell an untruth was very rare. Unicorns really didn't lie. "I can jump higher than the wall around the school grounds, I can make art, and I don't remember anything before I arrived on this island." They also weren't very good at it.

Ears flicking, he studied Anakin, then bobbed his head. "That you have been married twice, is that the lie?" he asked awkwardly, because to accuse someone of a lie was no small thing.

Jan was obviously uncertain, but it had to be that. Mates were mates for life.

"Because last week, I told you there's always going to be someone who can beat you," Ender replied, "And you seemed to understand what I was talking about." A pause. "And because that's a fact."

He could still be wrong, but as far as guesses went, this seemed likely. "Of course, you could also be a monk."

"So you've been married twice."

His loose assumption had been mostly confirmed, there.

Ella lied by omission almost every day of her life. She was good at this game. "I've been to a giants' wedding," she began. "My best subject in school is music. My full first name is Eleanor."
