Living on Your Own, Friday, Aug. 15, period 1

Tyler didn't seem especially inclined to chit-chat as he started class today, but that wasn't so far from his norm.

"All right," he said, once the students were all seated. "So you have a house -- decorated to your specifications -- and a job, and what you need is something to do in your down time. Drinking yourself into a coma is always a popular choice, and so is watching TV until your brain turns to goop. But on the off chance you need something more active to do and don't already spend all your time on the Internet arguing about plot holes in the new Z-Cases Movie, hobbies are good things. And knitting is a really popular hobby."

He held up a skein of gray yarn with knitting needles through it. "I learned to do this here. Eleven years ago, I could make a scarf. Right now, I can make a slightly better scarf. Here's how." He explained and demonstrated knitting, looking oddly proud of himself as he finished a few rows.

"The other popular thing to knit in Fandom, and I do not wanna know why, is dildo cozies." He held up one that looked like a very long, very skinny sock made from neon purple yarn. "There are patterns for those on your tables, should you feel so inspired."

"And that is it from me for the day, go ahead and knit. I'll be around."

This boy was not knitting. He actually looked like he'd rather set the yarn on fire.

"Am I gonna lose credit if I don't knit?"

"The yarn won't bite, you know," Ino informed him impishly.

"No, it won't, 'cause I'll burn it if it moves", he informed her seriously.

This was Fandom, after all.

...

Ino was just going to giggle now. "It's just yarn, come on. It's not evil and seriously doesn't deserve your glare."

This could not end well. It really couldn't. Ichigo had the needles and the yarn and a pattern to a scarf. It seemed like the easiest thing to start with.

Seemed. Several tries later, he still hadn't been able to set up the first row. He had succeeded in getting the yarn tangled up, however.

There might have been snickering coming from Ino's direction. A lot of snickering.

Strange how it was followed up with a yarn of red wool being thrown in Ino's direction as well. "Put a sock in it!"

The yarn was deftly caught and flung back at him. With more giggling.

Alice noticed the boy's distress and smiled. "Do you require assistance?" she asked.

He couldn't make a worse mess of it than she had, at six, griping and daydreaming and working the needles into knots.

At least she wasn't laughing at him. Stupid Ino.

"Well, I don't think I'm going to get there like this," he mumbled, which might have been a yes.

Re: Knit! [8/15]

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
She was doing her best to keep her amusement to herself.

"It's always complicated, at the start," she explained. "At least it was, for me. I fidget terribly. Start slowly, you needn't be clicking along at any great hurry. First, the cast on ..."

She demonstrated, holding her own needles, twisting the yarn and moving through the steps.

Francine might actually be a decent knitter if she could get over making this face at the dildo-cozy patterns long enough to pick up a pair of needles.

Luckily for her knitting had been covered by Suzume-sensei and her mom.

This did not mean that Ino liked it, but she was alright at it.

. . . yeah, Katchoo was resolutely not touching the needles, having convinced herself that they really would try to turn on her.

[identity profile] thismaskiwear.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Completely," she said tonelessly. Actually aside from the fear of betrayal by knitting needle she harbored a fear, not all that mild, that the whole dildo-cozy thing might make her laugh. She could probably use a laugh -- therefore she was going to resist that possibility.

Alice's needles were merrily clicking along. Her fingers found the rhythm and didn't need any input from her brain. She wondered if she would have to re-learn heels, or if her fingers had those tucked away, as well. One could hope.

Sam had never tried knitting before because his mun was determined to not let her obsession bleed in, but it didn't seem too complicated at first. Four knots and some tangled stitches later, he was wondering how people made it look so easy.
