Living on Your Own, Friday, Aug. 15, period 1

Tyler didn't seem especially inclined to chit-chat as he started class today, but that wasn't so far from his norm.

"All right," he said, once the students were all seated. "So you have a house -- decorated to your specifications -- and a job, and what you need is something to do in your down time. Drinking yourself into a coma is always a popular choice, and so is watching TV until your brain turns to goop. But on the off chance you need something more active to do and don't already spend all your time on the Internet arguing about plot holes in the new Z-Cases Movie, hobbies are good things. And knitting is a really popular hobby."

He held up a skein of gray yarn with knitting needles through it. "I learned to do this here. Eleven years ago, I could make a scarf. Right now, I can make a slightly better scarf. Here's how." He explained and demonstrated knitting, looking oddly proud of himself as he finished a few rows.

"The other popular thing to knit in Fandom, and I do not wanna know why, is dildo cozies." He held up one that looked like a very long, very skinny sock made from neon purple yarn. "There are patterns for those on your tables, should you feel so inspired."

"And that is it from me for the day, go ahead and knit. I'll be around."

It was reflex to duck and now he'd have to get up to pick it up again. "I don't want to be able to knit," he told her dryly.

"Why not?" she asked, rolling her eyes at him. "Too girly for you?"

"Don't forget boring," he added, making a face at the yarn.

"But useful," she said, wrinkling her nose.

Ino didn't entirely agree with the idea that it was useful, but hey, whatever.

"How exactly?" Ichigo wanted to know. "If I need a sweater, I'll just go buy it and the time I don't waste on trying to knit one, I can do something useful with."

She rolled her eyes. "Seriously, if you're making a sweater then you aren't doing it 'cause you need one right then and there. But it does make a nice gift, handmade you know, and it's also something for people who need to do things with their hands while they're, like, relaxing and watching television."

Geez.

"Yeah well... I can think of better gifts to make," he said stubbornly. "And that's not relaxing. It just drives the person next to you crazy as you're constantly going TICK-TICK-TICK!"

He never knew he felt strongly about this.

Part of Ino couldn't believe that she was actually arguing for the good of knitting. Geez.

"It totally can be relaxing for the other person too," she insisted. "It's a very homey sort of sound."

Ichigo stared at her. "You're a ninja. How's knitting homely?"

She stared back at him. "Mom does it," Ino said, frowning at him. "What's my being a ninja got to do with what I find homey?"

"It's just..." he considered it for a moment. "It's knitting."

"So?"

"It's lame!" he objected, as if she should know that.

...

"My mom is not lame!"

"I didn't say that. It's okay for older people," he waved off the protest.

"You did so!" she said, scowling at him. "You totally said my mom is lame. And there's utterly nothing wrong with me thinking that my mom knitting is homey!"

"I said knitting is lame," he explained slowly, so she'd understand him. "I didn't say your mom is lame. And fine, you can think whatever you want. I don't care."

"You're the one that started the argument!"

Maybe.

He didn't even remember who started it. "You laughed at me," he decided, which squarely placed the blame with her.

"You're the one that couldn't figure anything out."

"I don't want to figure it out!" he grumbled, finally getting up to pick up the fallen yarn. Which... really showed off Bermuda shorts. Dammit.

Ino was just going to giggle now. Yeah. Sure, she was also in shorts--which were pink and yellow, but she was a girl and therefore that much colour wasn't nearly so horrifying--but it was still funny when they were on him.

Which prompted Ichigo to throw the yarn back in her direction. "Shut. Up."

"Haven't you figured out by now that I never shut up?" With more giggling.

"Yeah, I have," he grumbled as he plopped back down in his seat and glowered at the knitting needles. "It means you're noisy." He wasn't in a terribly good mood.
