Tyler didn't seem especially inclined to chit-chat as he started class today, but that wasn't so far from his norm.

"All right," he said, once the students were all seated. "So you have a house -- decorated to your specifications -- and a job, and what you need is something to do in your down time. Drinking yourself into a coma is always a popular choice, and so is watching TV until your brain turns to goop. But on the off chance you need something more active to do and don't already spend all your time on the Internet arguing about plot holes in the new Z-Cases Movie, hobbies are good things. And knitting is a really popular hobby."

He held up a skein of gray yarn with knitting needles through it. "I learned to do this here. Eleven years ago, I could make a scarf. Right now, I can make a slightly better scarf. Here's how." He explained and demonstrated knitting, looking oddly proud of himself as he finished a few rows.

"The other popular thing to knit in Fandom, and I do not wanna know why, is dildo cozies." He held up one that looked like a very long, very skinny sock made from neon purple yarn. "There are patterns for those on your tables, should you feel so inspired."

"And that is it from me for the day, go ahead and knit. I'll be around."

. . . yeah, Katchoo was resolutely not touching the needles, having convinced herself that they really would try to turn on her.

Tyler stopped by her desk. "Are you too cool to knit, Katina?" he asked, tone mild. He didn't especially care if she did or not, he was mostly curious what her excuse would be.

"Completely," she said tonelessly. Actually aside from the fear of betrayal by knitting needle she harbored a fear, not all that mild, that the whole dildo-cozy thing might make her laugh. She could probably use a laugh -- therefore she was going to resist that possibility.

"It's like I told Michael, I can't make anybody do it," Tyler returned. "It's not bad, though, as a way to kill time."

Katchoo thought of the broken pieces of alarm clock she'd left in her alcove this morning. "'s better ways, too. Knitting really isn't me."

"And everything about me screams : 'This is a man who knits,' " Tyler rejoined, deadpan.

"Never underestimate the value of having a skill no one expects you to have," said Katchoo, who thought the phrase sounded vaguely familiar -- and then paled when she realized it was something drilled into her from her time with the Parker Girls.

"Exactly," Tyler said, eyes brightening. "Best way to keep people off-guard is to give them things they won't see coming.

"But how," asked Katchoo, shaking her head, "is knitting going to be useful that way?"

He considered it. "Probably it would be more for me than for you, in I could do it in public if I wanted to convince people I was a freak," he said. "A blond girl knitting, nobody's gonna look twice." He shrugged. "Put poison on the needles?"
