Tyler didn't seem especially inclined to chit-chat as he started class today, but that wasn't so far from his norm.

"All right," he said, once the students were all seated. "So you have a house -- decorated to your specifications -- and a job, and what you need is something to do in your down time. Drinking yourself into a coma is always a popular choice, and so is watching TV until your brain turns to goop. But on the off chance you need something more active to do and don't already spend all your time on the Internet arguing about plot holes in the new Z-Cases Movie, hobbies are good things. And knitting is a really popular hobby."

He held up a skein of gray yarn with knitting needles through it. "I learned to do this here. Eleven years ago, I could make a scarf. Right now, I can make a slightly better scarf. Here's how." He explained and demonstrated knitting, looking oddly proud of himself as he finished a few rows.

"The other popular thing to knit in Fandom, and I do not wanna know why, is dildo cozies." He held up one that looked like a very long, very skinny sock made from neon purple yarn. "There are patterns for those on your tables, should you feel so inspired."

"And that is it from me for the day, go ahead and knit. I'll be around."

"The yarn won't bite, you know," Ino informed him impishly.

"No, it won't, 'cause I'll burn it if it moves", he informed her seriously.

This was Fandom, after all.

Ino was just going to giggle now. "It's just yarn, come on. It's not evil and seriously doesn't deserve your glare."

"I'm not going to knit."

"What's wrong with knitting?" This had to do with manly pride stuff, right?

Ino rolled her eyes. Boys.

"I don't knit and I don't sew", he said flatly. "I can fix stuff without."

She rolled her eyes at him.

"Cheating's no excuse not to learn something like this, geez."

"It's not cheating. Cooking with powers is cheating and it tastes like shit anyway, but fixing with powers winds up better than without."

"Mmmm," she said, looking dubious. "But there's no feeling to it. If you knit a scarf, and give it to someone then they know that you spent time on it--it's different than powers."

"Making stuff from scratch's different. I can't do that with powers, but nobody'd want something I knitted."

"I'd bet Isabel would think it sweet," Ino said, smiling. "A few people would. And we're making things from scratch right now, so why not try?"

"She'd say so, and then it'd go in a drawer and never come out again." He shrugged. "It's girly stuff."

"Like Hank thinks cooking is?" she said, with a sideways glance at him. "Boys knit too, you know."

"Not any boy I ever met. Including on Max's side of town."

"'Course not," she scoffed. "Like they'd do something like that and admit to it when people are going to have knee-jerk reactions like you're having now."

"Then how do you know they do it?"

"Boys are way more likely to tell girls, you know," she said, smiling. "Especially if they know the girl won't laugh at them. Dad does flower arrangements in his spare time, and most people I know would think that's pretty girly, but that's what he enjoys."

Michael eyes her.

"Your dad seriously does flower arrangements?"

"He seriously does flower arrangements," she said. "Mum sells them in the shop but he just does them for fun, as a hobby. Dad's the one that taught me most of what I know about flowers."

"Well, I guess if that's his thing.." Another shrug. "Doesn't have to be mine."

"Never said it had to be," Ino said, exasperated. "But it's not going to make you any less of a boy to knit during class."

"You knit if you like it so much."

Ino held up the start of her scarf as proof. "Have been. Come on, Michael. No one in this class is going to think anything of you doing what the teacher says."

Michael reached out idly to poke at her scarf.

"No. I'm not the only one not doing it, look."

"That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it," Ino said, wrinkling her nose at him as he poked her scarf.
