Library [06/16]

While Sam was very, very glad to be away from the volcano, he couldn't help but wish that the island had taken them somewhere a little cooler. He didn't mind being inside on days like this.

"True," Peter admitted. "But that's like putting black paint in a bucket of white. Doesn't make it totally black. Just mixes both together. So you're geeky with a little non-geek in you."

Sam put the books he had away, and grabbed the next-to-last one. "Do you think geeky or dorky is a bad thing?" he asked.

Peter held on to the book to make sure he had Sam's attention. He wanted to say this while looking Sam in the eyes. "I never said it was a bad thing."

The eye contact helped, and Sam smiled at Peter. "I just wanted to make sure. Not everyone feels that way. And nerd is totally a bad thing, so I figured I was good with just the other two."

"You're not a nerd," Peter said. "Not as far as I'm concerned anyway."

"Thanks," Sam said, going to grab the last of the books from Peter.

That caught Peter by surprise so he stumbled forward as Sam grabbed the book before Peter could let go of it.

Sam was surprised too, to suddenly have Peter right there in his personal space, and all he could do for a moment was stand still.

And... wow. With the sudden awkward. Since this wasn't supposed to be awkward but having to think about making it not awkward is pretty much what made it awkward.

Which was why Peter was very glad for the automatic failsafe of fiddling with his bangs for lack of anything more suave to do. Which is what he did once he let the book go. There was an extra bonus lack of eye contact that came with it.

Sam was also finding that thinking about making things less awkward was not actually making things less awkward, and turned his focus to the shelves, pretending that figuring out where the last book went took a lot of thought. "Uh, thanks," he said. "For the help."

"What're friends for?" Peter replied. Looking back towards the counter reminded him. "Besides bringing you donuts and coffee."

"I don't know. I've never had a friend quite like you," Sam said, turning a little red when he realized how that sounded right now, as true as it might have been. He coughed awkwardly, and shoved the last book onto the shelf. "I'm sorry if the coffee isn't quite as hot as when you came in, but I bet it's still good."

"Actually it's iced coffee again," Peter said. "So it might actually be warm now."

"We won't get brain freeze," Sam said, smiling softly.

"There," Peter said, smiling back. "It's like you've saved the day with your geekiness."

That made Sam blush in a different way as he smiled more. "Geekiness has its occasional uses," he said. "That's why it's not all bad."

"No, it's not," Peter agreed. He headed back over to the counter. "So I see you survived the weekend."

"Yeah, although I think the island getting away from the volcano helped," Sam said. "I just hope everything's okay back there."

"Me too." Peter helped himself to a donut. "At least everybody evacuated, as far as I could tell."

"That's good," Sam said. He took a donut and was about to start on the coffee when something clicked, and he looked at Peter. "How do you know?"

"I looked," Peter replied.

"You looked from here, where it was nice and safe?" Sam asked.

"No," Peter said. "I looked over there where I'd actually be able to see people."

"You went onto the island? During the active volcano period," Sam said, all awkwardness gone as he stared at Peter. "Are you out of your mind?"

"What if somebody needed help getting out?" Peter replied. "I'm not supposed to lend a hand?"
