Detention, Saturday June 7, 2008

When the students came through the door into the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a grassy knoll. Stretching out before them was an expanse of warm, thick bubbling mud over which a simple ropes course had been built. On the other side of that was a stretch of solid ground, and on the other side of that was a lake.

Harriet was waiting for them, hands behind her back. "Good morning." She favoured them all with a brief smile. "All you have to do is get to the other side." She waved behind them, where the door they'd come through had disappeared, then pointed into the distance, where it could just be seen. "As you can see, that's where the door is now. You will work in pairs to go over the course and across the rope bridge, after which you will build a raft and paddle across the lake. You'll find everything you could possibly imagine you'd need to build one waiting for you."

She announced the pairs -- Ella and Ino, Lois and Gwen, Gavin and John -- and then added, somewhat sharply, "Gavin and John, you're going to have an extra special challenge." Harriet threw a belt with metal loops to each of them, and a length of climbing rope with a carabineer on each end. "You will put those on, and you will stay clipped together until you leave, or we're going to be spending every Saturday from now until the end of time together." She gave them a look. "And I will not be happy about it. Now, off you go!" She smiled again. "I'll be keeping an eye on you from outside."

And she turned away towards the door, walking about two feet above the mud, the ground, and the water, and left.

Ino knew better than to grumble about detention, even if she hadn't done anything to deserve it.

That didn't mean she was precisely happy about, you know, having detention. Even if this one didn't seem so bad. "How much cheating do you think we're allowed?" Ino wondered aloud.

"She didn't say not to cheat," Ella pointed out. "Do you have a good idea?"

She was already annoyed enough to be stuck in detention for absolutely no reason. Cheating was fine.

"Well, see, I can walk on water? And the mud isn't a problem either. So it's just the getting over with, well, you that's going to be tricky. 'Cause, yeah. I'm tinier than you and carrying you would be more than a little difficult I'm thinking."

A beat.

"Not, mind, that I'm insulting you or anything. But nearly everyone here is bigger than me."

"You know, she did just leave..." John pointed out, picking up one end of the rope and twirling it.

The ropes course

If you fall, the safety protocols will catch you, and set you mostly gently on the ground. Which in this case means into the warm, oozy, gloopy mud (http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh68/fhcollective/detention%20june07/mud-bath_16814.jpg). There's also the option to simply walk through the mud, it's only four feet deep.

Gavin dragged John towards the rope wall and looked up at it. "This is all your fault."

"How is it my fault?" John said, grabbing hold of the ropes and starting to climb. "Come on!" He tugged on their tether as he couldn't get very far without Gavin.

Lois looked over the ropes course with a look of anticipation on her face. She had been doing stuff like this for as long as she could remember.

"This should be nothing," Lois informed Gwen.

"Nothing, right," Gwen repeated. "That's what they always say right before something tries to eat your head."

Ella stood, just staring at the wall as she got her courage up. "It looks steeper when I get close."

Ino, for her part, was barely paying attention to the ropes. What? They were standard Academy-fare, really. She was more concerned about her partner.

"You going to be okay?" she asked.

Over the bridge

It's three ropes (http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh68/fhcollective/detention%20june07/msr98-b14.jpg), thirty feet long, one to walk on, two to hang onto, and hmm, it looks like it's not mud under this part.

It's pudding. Chocolate pudding.

It's only two feet deep, so, again, you can walk through it if you prefer. It's still warm and gloopy and oozy and bubbly, though. Mmmm.

"I'm starting to hate ropes," Gavin said, looking out over the next obstacle.

"This bridge is stupid," John said, heading out and not noticing his shirt caught on one of the hooks holding the ropes to the wood. It tore his collar at the shoulder fairly effectively. "Damnit!"

Build your raft

At last, solid ground! There are huge bins just waiting to have exciting items pulled out of them. Seriously, if you think you can build a raft out of it, the Danger Shop will have it there for you. If you want barrels, driftwood, duct tape, ropes, plastic bottles, PVC pipes, planks, plywood...it's there.

Feel free to be as whacky as you like, but it has to carry both of you. There's also one paddle per person.

"You're just not looking close enough," John sighed, noting a coil by the plastic bottles. "I vote for duct tape and barrels."

Paddle across the lake

It's not too far, only about a quarter of a mile. Let's just hope your raft stays together.

Once you reach the bank on the other side, you can leave!

John sat atop the barrels with his oar, hoping like hell this worked. "If we stroke together, we'll go further faster."
