Detention, Saturday June 7, 2008

When the students came through the door into the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a grassy knoll. Stretching out before them was an expanse of warm, thick bubbling mud over which a simple ropes course had been built. On the other side of that was a stretch of solid ground, and on the other side of that was a lake.

Harriet was waiting for them, hands behind her back. "Good morning." She favoured them all with a brief smile. "All you have to do is get to the other side." She waved behind them, where the door they'd come through had disappeared, then pointed into the distance, where it could just be seen. "As you can see, that's where the door is now. You will work in pairs to go over the course and across the rope bridge, after which you will build a raft and paddle across the lake. You'll find everything you could possibly imagine you'd need to build one waiting for you."

She announced the pairs -- Ella and Ino, Lois and Gwen, Gavin and John -- and then added, somewhat sharply, "Gavin and John, you're going to have an extra special challenge." Harriet threw a belt with metal loops to each of them, and a length of climbing rope with a carabineer on each end. "You will put those on, and you will stay clipped together until you leave, or we're going to be spending every Saturday from now until the end of time together." She gave them a look. "And I will not be happy about it. Now, off you go!" She smiled again. "I'll be keeping an eye on you from outside."

And she turned away towards the door, walking about two feet above the mud, the ground, and the water, and left.

"Stroke!" John dug his oar into the water, calling out the signal as they went along.

And Gavin dug in, stroking as hard as his pudding covered arms would allow him.

Sticky with pudding and slightly damp from the paddling, John was glad when they finally reached the side. "That wasn't too bad, huh? Given how detention can be."

"Not too bad," Gavin agreed, climbing onto the other side and yanking on the rope that attached them. "I am going to smell like pudding for days."

"Still attached here!" John reminded him, trying to untie his end. "At least it's chocolate and a good conversation starter," John decided.

"Yeah, that's just what I wanna talk about," Gavin said. "At least we didn't kill each other."

"It is weird. We done with that?"

"Done with the raft?" Gavin asked.

"Done with the murder."

"I can be done if you are."

"Whatever," John shrugged, shucking off the belt and using it to wipe some of the dried pudding off his chest. "We can see how it goes."

"Whatever?" Gavin repeated. "Don't sound so excited."

"You want me to jump for joy?"

Re: Paddle across the lake

"No," Gavin said. "But, we could make an effort here. We don't have to kill each other. It kinda hurts when we try. I mean, I know, being nice to each other might be as hard as one of us auditioning for a school musical by singing but still."

"And it's not like we really have a good reason when we do try," John added. "So, are we friends now?" Were they friends before? He couldn't remember.

"I think we are," Gavin decided. "I mean, we haven't always been antagonistic."

"Right, we were all friends. We helped Karal prank his teacher even," John remembered. "And Luke had a third arm."

Re: Paddle across the lake

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Gavin laughed and said, "Right, Luke and his third arm. He was gullible. I think we can manage this. And if we feel the need to fight, maybe we can just get some pudding before we start?"

"There you go, a surefire way to put a halt to any fist fights." Pudding was awesome.

Re: Paddle across the lake

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"All right," Gavin said and stuck out his hand. "Come on."

Re: Paddle across the lake

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
John grasped Gavin's hand in a firm shake.
