Detention, Saturday June 7, 2008

When the students came through the door into the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a grassy knoll. Stretching out before them was an expanse of warm, thick bubbling mud over which a simple ropes course had been built. On the other side of that was a stretch of solid ground, and on the other side of that was a lake.

Harriet was waiting for them, hands behind her back. "Good morning." She favoured them all with a brief smile. "All you have to do is get to the other side." She waved behind them, where the door they'd come through had disappeared, then pointed into the distance, where it could just be seen. "As you can see, that's where the door is now. You will work in pairs to go over the course and across the rope bridge, after which you will build a raft and paddle across the lake. You'll find everything you could possibly imagine you'd need to build one waiting for you."

She announced the pairs -- Ella and Ino, Lois and Gwen, Gavin and John -- and then added, somewhat sharply, "Gavin and John, you're going to have an extra special challenge." Harriet threw a belt with metal loops to each of them, and a length of climbing rope with a carabineer on each end. "You will put those on, and you will stay clipped together until you leave, or we're going to be spending every Saturday from now until the end of time together." She gave them a look. "And I will not be happy about it. Now, off you go!" She smiled again. "I'll be keeping an eye on you from outside."

And she turned away towards the door, walking about two feet above the mud, the ground, and the water, and left.

"You're pulling me off!" John warned too late as he lost his grip and started falling gently toward the ground.

And Gavin fell right after him and right into the pudding.

Laying next to Gavin, John cringed at the warm, bubbling, oozing substance that was now all over him. "Ugh."

"Your fault," Gavin said, slipping and sliding in an attempt to get to his knees.

"You're the one who pulled me off," John retorted, getting to his feet rather precariously.

"You're the one who fell," Gavin said and tossed a handful of pudding at John.

Catching the pudding with his face, John was not incredibly pleased. "You're the one who just ended any unspoken truce we had." He reached out to grab hold of Gavin's shirt.

"I was just sharing the pudding," Gavin said, wrenching himself backwards and hearing the telltale sounds of his shirt ripping.

"Ha!" John laughed and dropped his hold on Gavin's shirt. "Looks like someone could use a needle and thread."

Gavin just peeled away the pudding encrusted remains of his shirt and glared at John. "Why'd you have to do that?"

"It wasn't on purpose," John pointed out. "Shoddy craftsmanship. You're better off."

"Yeah, because I really wanna serve the rest of this detention out shirtless and covered in pudding," Gavin groused.

"Consider us on even footing," John said, scooping up some warm chocolate and flinging it toward Gavin.

"Yeah, because us being shirtless in pudding is really an advantage," Gavin said.

"The faster we get through this, the faster we can get to the shower and not be coated in pudding," John told him.

"Separate showers."

"Separate showers," Gavin said and started slogging through the pudding to the next (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1792001.html?thread=111268353#t111268353) obstacle.
