When the students came through the door into the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a grassy knoll. Stretching out before them was an expanse of warm, thick bubbling mud over which a simple ropes course had been built. On the other side of that was a stretch of solid ground, and on the other side of that was a lake.

Harriet was waiting for them, hands behind her back. "Good morning." She favoured them all with a brief smile. "All you have to do is get to the other side." She waved behind them, where the door they'd come through had disappeared, then pointed into the distance, where it could just be seen. "As you can see, that's where the door is now. You will work in pairs to go over the course and across the rope bridge, after which you will build a raft and paddle across the lake. You'll find everything you could possibly imagine you'd need to build one waiting for you."

She announced the pairs -- Ella and Ino, Lois and Gwen, Gavin and John -- and then added, somewhat sharply, "Gavin and John, you're going to have an extra special challenge." Harriet threw a belt with metal loops to each of them, and a length of climbing rope with a carabineer on each end. "You will put those on, and you will stay clipped together until you leave, or we're going to be spending every Saturday from now until the end of time together." She gave them a look. "And I will not be happy about it. Now, off you go!" She smiled again. "I'll be keeping an eye on you from outside."

And she turned away towards the door, walking about two feet above the mud, the ground, and the water, and left.

"Well, your version of talk is a lot like baiting where I come from," John said. "Maybe a vow of silence is in order."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Gavin said, pulling himself up to the top and looking at the walkway. "You're paranoid."

John followed, completely paranoid. "Oh great. We're gonna have to work together to get across that with this stupid rope."

"How good's your balance?" Gavin asked.

"Depends on who's trying to pull me down," John replied.

"If you fall, I fall, idiot," Gavin said. "I just don't want you to stumble and fall and take me with you."

"Yeah, I got that part," John huffed. "What with the rope and all."

"So, is your balance good or not?" Gavin asked again.

"Yes, I am capable of balancing," John told him. "Are you dim or something?"

"Just checking," Gavin said, smirking. "I'll go first. If you fall, you're getting my fist in your face."

"You say that like it's supposed to scare me," John smirked back.

"Are you going, or are we making a camp here?"

"Shut up," Gavin said and stepped out on the walkway, taking the ropes and stepping out.

Making faces behind him, John followed, stepping closely behind Gavin since their rope didn't give them much slack.

"This is like basic training," Gavin said, stepping carefully.

"This is like team building camp for junior high schoolers," John muttered. "You're on Jaina's squadron, right? Just like fifty years earlier?"

"Yeah, I don't know her in my time," Gavin said, keeping a slow pace. "She knows me though. Which is just weird."

"It is," John agreed, being good and keeping with Gavin's pace. "To think there are other versions of yourself wandering around, doing things you wouldn't do."

"Yeah, well, at least I haven't heard of a past version of me singing for some musical or something," Gavin said.

"That would be just wrong," John shuddered. "You know there was another me here before." He didn't know why he was telling Gavin this, but consider it an olive branch.

"Oh yeah?" Gavin asked, looking back over his shoulder. "Did anyone that's here now know him?"

John coughed a little. "He was involved with Lana apparently. And knew Professor Skywalker."

"Awkward," Gavin said, almost gleeful at seeing the other side. "Does Lana like you still?"

"I don't know, but she's nice enough about it," John replied, so glad this part was almost over with. "I'd be seriously confused if my ex showed up and didn't know me."

"I don't know how she can resist you," Gavin staid, stepping over onto the other side. "What with you being so ravishing and all."

"You know, I've been told I'm irresistible, but I'm really very taken," he informed Gavin, joining him on the platform. Just in case.
