Detention, Saturday June 7, 2008

When the students came through the door into the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a grassy knoll. Stretching out before them was an expanse of warm, thick bubbling mud over which a simple ropes course had been built. On the other side of that was a stretch of solid ground, and on the other side of that was a lake.

Harriet was waiting for them, hands behind her back. "Good morning." She favoured them all with a brief smile. "All you have to do is get to the other side." She waved behind them, where the door they'd come through had disappeared, then pointed into the distance, where it could just be seen. "As you can see, that's where the door is now. You will work in pairs to go over the course and across the rope bridge, after which you will build a raft and paddle across the lake. You'll find everything you could possibly imagine you'd need to build one waiting for you."

She announced the pairs -- Ella and Ino, Lois and Gwen, Gavin and John -- and then added, somewhat sharply, "Gavin and John, you're going to have an extra special challenge." Harriet threw a belt with metal loops to each of them, and a length of climbing rope with a carabineer on each end. "You will put those on, and you will stay clipped together until you leave, or we're going to be spending every Saturday from now until the end of time together." She gave them a look. "And I will not be happy about it. Now, off you go!" She smiled again. "I'll be keeping an eye on you from outside."

And she turned away towards the door, walking about two feet above the mud, the ground, and the water, and left.

"Will that hold?" Gavin asked.

"You got a better idea?" John was no sailor.

"Well, no, but your idea sounds dangerous," Gavin said.

"We could always swim across instead?"

"How deep you think it is?" Gavin asked, looking at the water.

"No idea. We could build a quick raft, hope we get at least halfway and swim the rest?" He was trying to make a plan. It didn't seem to matter to him that it wasn't very good.

"Hm." Gavin considered it. "You a good swimmer?"

"Yep," John nodded. "You?"

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Gavin said. "One of us won't drown if the other goes down then."

"Going down shouldn't be a problem," John surmised, picking up the duct tape and strapping two barrels together.

"You gone down before?" Gavin asked.

"I surf, so it's one of those things that's hard to avoid all the time," John replied.

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't surf but there's no way that I'm going down without a good reason," Gavin decided.

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, the raft breaking apart shouldn't be reason enough," John said, grabbing some more barrels and connecting them to the other two. "Unless it hits you on the head as it does..."

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Well," Gavin said, reaching for the duct tape to help, "that's better getting hit in the face with the raft due to springing."

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, we'll use extra duct tape," John said, stretching out a long piece before adding, "No white ropes."

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I've always had bad luck with white ropes," Gavin said, holding the barrels together so John could tape them. "They get stuck to everything."

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Your universe is strange," John decided, attaching the barrels securely. "Think that's enough?"

Re: Build your raft

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah." Gavin nodded at the raft. "If anything, we swim."

"Then let's get this sucker in the water (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1792001.html?thread=111275777#t111275777)," John said, dragging the odd raft forward.
