Kaylee had pretty much fallen in love with the fruit available, since she'd only ever had a few of these things once or twice before, and some not at all. And so she was happily sitting on the side, watching people and slowly working her way through a small mountain of strawberries.

"Are they good strawberries?" Ella asked, taking one from her own plate to see.

"They're amazing," Kaylee told her, nodding and grinning happily. "I never seen so many in one place before!"

"Neither had I, outside a market," Ella said seriously as she bit into a berry. "Oh. These are good, even better than the grapes."

"Never had grapes," Kaylee said thoughtfully, enjoying her strawberries enough that she was thinking about smuggling some into her dorm room.

"Never at all?" Ella asked, surprised.

She held a small cluster out for the girl to try. "What about gooseberries? At home those are my favorites, especially in tarts."

"What's a gooseberry?" she asked curiously, taking one of the grapes and smiling in thanks.

"Those look really, really good." It might have been that he'd never seen anyone treat strawberries with such reverence before.

"They're wonderful," she sighed happily. "Best I ever had."

'Course, Kaylee'd only had a handful of strawberries in all her sixteen years, so it wasn't much of a testament.

"The mango is pretty good too. And all the food is free. There's a kid trying to get you to pay for it, but he's not serious. Mind if I sit down here?"

"Oooh, mango." She actually knew what that was. She was kind of proud of herself. "And sure thing! Ground's as much mine as anyone's to claim."

Friday dropped down and wiped his dusty hands on his pants before looking out at the crowd. "Are you one of the new people too or an old person?"

"I'm partial to the grapes myself," Alice confessed, smiling at the other girl's mound of fruit.

"I tried those," Kaylee said, nodding. "But the strawberries are so happy-lookin', y'know?"

"I hadn't thought of it like that," Alice laughed. "The red grapes, they're delicious, but the green ones almost taste like sunlight. I hope they're all very happy fruits, from a cheery orchard of some kind, and not lamenting their fate."

"That'd be awful," Kaylee said sadly. "We don't got a lot of this stuff at home. These look lots friendlier. Like they're happy! The ones at home kinda seem lonely in a way."

"Maybe that's the best possible fate, for fruit," Alice grinned. "To be plucked at the perfect time and eaten at a picnic. In which case we should have rather a lot, so we're not letting them down."
