"I tried those," Kaylee said, nodding. "But the strawberries are so happy-lookin', y'know?"

"I hadn't thought of it like that," Alice laughed. "The red grapes, they're delicious, but the green ones almost taste like sunlight. I hope they're all very happy fruits, from a cheery orchard of some kind, and not lamenting their fate."

"That'd be awful," Kaylee said sadly. "We don't got a lot of this stuff at home. These look lots friendlier. Like they're happy! The ones at home kinda seem lonely in a way."

"Maybe that's the best possible fate, for fruit," Alice grinned. "To be plucked at the perfect time and eaten at a picnic. In which case we should have rather a lot, so we're not letting them down."

"Doing them a favor," Alice decided, popping another grape into her mouth. "So very kind of us. I'm Alice, by the way. I keep forgetting my manners to-day."

"Just arrived this morning," she said. "I thought we were to be in Virginia, but I'm told this is Greece. I had no idea islands went vacationing. I'll have to pay them more mind in the future."

She lowered her voice, looking around a little before adding, "Did you actually ... apply to go to school here? I don't think I did. I should have remembered that."

"I did," she said, nodding. "Are you listed on all the stuff? Maybe they just knew you were comin'."

"They sent a letter," she said, nodding. "And assigned me a sibling and a roommate, both of whom are very nice. My new brother said that that ... happens, now and again. Something decides you're to be here and they notify you accordingly. Makes it seem like a proper adventure."
