"Never had grapes," Kaylee said thoughtfully, enjoying her strawberries enough that she was thinking about smuggling some into her dorm room.

"Never at all?" Ella asked, surprised.

She held a small cluster out for the girl to try. "What about gooseberries? At home those are my favorites, especially in tarts."

"What's a gooseberry?" she asked curiously, taking one of the grapes and smiling in thanks.

"It's a little green fruit, sort of sweet-tart," Ella explained, then realized she hadn't introduced herself. "I'm Ella, by the way. Are you new too?"

She nodded, quickly swallowing the grape. "Those are almost as good as strawberries," she decided. "And I'm Kaylee. Nice t'meet you."

"Same to you," Ella agreed. "There are so many people here, I've no idea how we're to meet everyone."

"I haven't been tryin' much," she admitted. "Just kind of been watching, y'know? I'm sure it'll help when we're in classes and stuff."

"Which is Monday!" Ella exclaimed. "I'm almost nervous, but also excited by the prospect."

"Do you know what you're taking?" she wondered.

"Vacationing, food, and kings and queens," Ella answered. "It's three of my favorite things -- well, two, but we've kings and queens at home so it seemed worth learning more about them. And you?"

"Mechanics, Flight, and the History of Sex." Kaylee only had the faintest of blushes due to that last one. "I was so excited they've got somethin' for me to tinker with."

Ella blushed herself about the last thing. "You build things?" she asked. "I'm impressed by that skill. We don;t have flying machines at home."

"You don't?" Kaylee looked amazed. "My daddy says I got natural talent with engines 'n stuff. I just help him when he's got work."

Ella shook her head. "I got here in a carriage."

"My father," she added crossly, popping a grape into her mouth, "is a merchant. He travels a great deal."

"He ever bring you back anything good?" Kaylee asked hopefully.

"Only to show me, and see if something is worth trying to sell," Ella said, a trace of bitterness creeping into her voice. "We're not close."

Which was a bit of an understatement.

Kaylee winced sympathetically. "Any siblings?"

"No," Ella said, then corrected herself. "I suppose I have two stepsisters, as of last night. But it's not like we grew up together." Thank god for that. "What about you?"

"Nope," she said cheerfully. "Just me and Mom and Daddy. I hope they're doin' okay."
