"Cool?" she repeated, looking confused. "I'm not all that cold right now."

"Oh, no, not like cold. Cool means like, um, groovy or peachy or good! Yeah, it means good."

"Shiny!" Kaylee said, comprehension dawning. "Oh, good, people have been shiny, yes."

"Shiny," Friday repeated, making sure he understood it. "Shiny means cool. Or cool means shiny. I'll have to remember that one." He nibbled at his strawberry. "This place is way better than my old school. They didn't have picnics and orientation was more paperwork and bad tours and bullies pushing you around."

Kaylee made a face. "That's when you push right back."

"They're mostly harmless. Like to make a big show for the new kids. It's weird there haven't been any here yet. The only thing I've had so far is a guy trying to tell me that every Friday is Shirtless Friday and getting me to take my shirt off."

"A boy tried that with me, too." Kaylee grinned. "I told him next time, since I only just got here. Don't seem right, disrobin' 'fore I even know everyone's name."

"One girl did. I think she might be new too. Not that you should," he added hastily, "I guess some people just have more confidence than the rest of us mortals, right?"

"Somethin' like that," she agreed easily. "Kinda puts you in a fix, though, your name bein' Friday and all."

"I know. Now I get the feeling I'm expected to be shirtless all the time, which wouldn't be so bad in the summer aside from self-esteem issues, but when the weather gets colder? Forget about it."

"Betcha could find a loophole," Kaylee offered. "No shirts, but sweaters're okay."

"I like that loophole. Maybe not in summer though. I'll have to see if I can find a loophole for hot weather that won't end up with me getting heat exhaustion."

"You could suggest Naked Thursdays instead, or somethin'," Kaylee offered.

Friday's brain broke slightly. "My Mum's name is Thursday, so I think I'd rather not. Tuesday and Wednesday after family members as well. But we could definitely look at Saturdays as an option. Um, not for me though. I'd feel a little too self-conscious."

"Saturdays it is," she said easily. "Your family's kinda got a theme, huh?"

"One of many, many things weird about my family. What about you? Do you have family?"

"Parents," she said cheerfully. "They didn't really want me to come for awhile but I wore 'em down okay."

"Good thing you did or you wouldn't have had these shiny strawberries." He paused a beat. "Did I use 'shiny' right?"

"You did!" she said happily, coming so close to clapping.

"Cool. I mean shiny. So where is it that they use 'shiny' instead of 'cool'?"

"Home. Which is another galaxy, about five hundred years from now," Kaylee said casually.

He hadn't been expecting that, but it didn't totally surprise him. "Five hundred?" He did the math. "Why would you want to come here then? That'd be like me going to the Middle Ages. Although I like to think I'd look pretty good in chain mail."

"I didn't know that part," she told him, shrugging. "S'not so bad. I haven't looked at the tech or nothin' yet, though. It'll be interesting lookin' at engines and the like."

"I can probably show you some stuff about computers if you don't get to it first."

"Oooh." Kaylee's eyes went wide. "I don't know too much 'bout computers at home, so bein' here might make that worse. That'd be helpful."
