Interactive Religion [Tuesday, March 25]

"There was kind of an important religious holiday on Sunday, huh?" Biff asked, passing out chocolate eggs and bunnies.

After all, Josh had said that there should be bunnies whenever bad things happened to him. Biff hadn't known someone else had written that down somewhere. Josh had been pretty drunk when he'd said it.

"So let's talk about my best friend, Joshua of Nazareth, founder of Christianity. I, um, missed the thing on the Sunday after the crucifixion, but I was there for everything leading up to it. Rather than lecturing at you, I figured it'd be easier if you asked questions and I answered them. I'll be dedicating a whole class to the apostles, so don't worry if you can't keep them all straight. And I have no idea what's going on with the Catholic Church now, or televangelists, or those stickers asking what Jesus would drive. If you want to know what he was really like, I can tell you that. If you want to know, you know, religion, um, ask the guy down at the church."

Rikku chewed on her lip, and then hesitantly raised her hand.

Karal was looking curiously at his egg and his bunny while he thought of a question. He finally raised his hand and ventured, "I know his teachings were twisted by men after he died." Karse had had its god's words altered by men, the Church turning Vkandis' Writ into something near-unrecognisable. This was a question close to Karal's heart. "What did your friend truly wish people to learn?"

Biff smiled. "That there is something eternal in all of us. Josh called it the Holy Spirit. Other religions call it by other names, but that was the Kingdom Josh was bringing if you believed that he was who he said he was and didn't value things over people. And it was open to everyone. Even Romans. Even Gentiles. Everyone."

Rikku really hoped it wasn't rude to ask a question from someone else's question, but she needed clarification, here.

"Everyone everyone?" she asked. "'Cause ..."

Because usually "everyone" didn't mean "everyone," was all.

Romeo grinned back at Biff. "I don't suppose you would write that down and mail it to the teachers at St Paul's School in Verona," he mused aloud. "Might save some of the younger students some rather unpleasant lessons I was made to sit through."

Sitting through, listening, and believing were far different things to Romeo.

"He was more ready than we were," Biff said. "He said we'd had blood on our doors for two long. He sacrificed himself to make a point to his father. I tried everything to stop it from happening--tying him up, ignoring his requests, poisoning him...he was determined."
