Library; Wednesday [ 01/09 ]

There was an almost ceremonial feeling in the air as Adah limped into the library; it hadn't been a while since she'd been there, no, of course not, but it had felt like it had been a while since she'd opened it. Not that she ever did an exceptional amount of work while she was there, but she limped in, found the desk, carefully pulling out her chair. She had a seat, centered it carefully, and then settled her bag on one corner. She then meticulously angled the books so that they were balanced with everything else on the desk. She brushed a hand over the surface, leaned in close, and blew a stream of air over imaginary dust. And then she was prepared to start the day, after a theatrical, though extremely quiet, mouse-like cough at the imaginary disturbance of her lungs.

And her smile only made him grin and lean a little closer. "You're gonna work in the clinic? Dishing out medical knowledge to everyone less smart than you...which is everyone?"

Adah's laugh gained a little bit of volume; it was rather convenient, that she wouldn't have to say what she was thinking because he'd already said it. Biting her lip a moment as she grinned at him, she let her expression show her appreciation for the comment, ignored the grammatical implications of less smart, and then ducked her head to write.

"Not everyone," she wrote. "And intelligence will only get me so far. I have to prove that my disability won't hinder my ability to save lives."

"It won't," he said immediately. "You won't let it. You'll do fine. I'll have to add another place to visit you on my list of stops to make on weekends."

Adah quirked an eyebrow. "Hopefully the visit would be purely a visit; I'd hate to have you visit there because you had to. Although, in that vein, I can't recall the last time you came in here and walked out with a book, either, so I shouldn't even worry."

"Good point," he said and laughed. "I'll take a book home today to keep up appearances. And don't worry, I've got a high pain tolerance. Comes from living with a younger brother for years."

There was another grin, even if the Eel's reason for a high tolerance of pain was different than her own; she had a feeling if she wasn't stuck dealing with pain on an every day basis, though, that Leah wouldn't hesitate to help make up the difference.

"I have books for you, actually," she wrote. "Your Christmas present. Late, and probably later. I haven't finished reading them yet."

"You're reading my Christmas presents?" Lee asked, looking and sounding amused. "Are they good?"

"I wouldn't be reading them," Adah said, figuring that short little quips weren't worth the effort of having look toward her notebook when she could just continue looking at him, "if they weren't." She reached over and slid the book she'd been reading between then and tapped the cover a bit. "Science fiction, from my time. So you can see where my views of space and space travel and interplanetary coexistence are coming from and can understand better all the crazy looks I have to give you when you talk about your home and flying."

"Even with all your crazy looks," he said, flipping through the book a little, "you still don't seem to mind that I'm from another planet."

"It helps," Adah commented, "that you don't have tentacles or a third eye in the center of your forehead that feeds off human energy."

"Oh yeah, I left that side of me at home," Lee said absently, nodding over his shoulder in a direction that was nowhere near his home.

"Good choice," Adah complimented with a light chuckle and a smile to match.

"I look better like this, huh?" Lee asked, smirking at her.

"Well, I haven't seen the other, so I can't make an educated comparison," Adah commented back; she laid an arm down on the desk to help support her as she leaned in a little, neck craned slightly (but not enough to stress it) as she looked up at him. Her expression was critical, but her eyes dancing. "But I do admit that I am rather fond of this look, yes."

He grinned, blushed and leaned in a little closer to towards her. "And I'm rather fond of looking at you."

The grin increased; the stretched of her neck would have, as well, but Adah discovered that it was being stubborn and wouldn't currently move. "Even without tentacles or third eyes?"

"Even without tentacles or a third eye," he echoed with a grin. "Those would just get in the way anyway."

"Well, the tentacles, at least," Adah reasoned lightly. "The eye, though, that would just get distracting."

"I could cover it with an eyepatch," he teased lightly. "Like a pirate."

"As if that would be any less distracting," Adah rolled her eyes playfully. "Although, you know my stance on piracy, so, if that were the case, then ther'd be more to distract me than just the eyepatch."

"Every time we talk about pirates, I end up losing my shirt," he said, smiling. "I think that's your grand plan."

Adah loftily shrugged a shoulder. "I stick with what works."

"Because you're smart," he said, nodding. "And cunning."

With a wry little smile and a risk of straining her neck muscles, Adah gave a firm confident nod. She didn't feel anything else needed to be said in response to a statement so true.

And then the muscle did strain, and her head made a sharp jerk to the left. She recovered, her eyes shifting for a moment to the side as an embarrassed blush started to rise. She then returned her eyes steadily, with the intention of pretending it didn't happen. Maybe he wouldn't notice, anyway. But at least she knew he probably wouldn't mind.

He had noticed but he didn't say anything about it. He just kept smiling, waiting for her to feel comfortable again.

"You're smarter than me," he said. He knew she knew that but he still said.
