Library; Wednesday [ 01/09 ]

There was an almost ceremonial feeling in the air as Adah limped into the library; it hadn't been a while since she'd been there, no, of course not, but it had felt like it had been a while since she'd opened it. Not that she ever did an exceptional amount of work while she was there, but she limped in, found the desk, carefully pulling out her chair. She had a seat, centered it carefully, and then settled her bag on one corner. She then meticulously angled the books so that they were balanced with everything else on the desk. She brushed a hand over the surface, leaned in close, and blew a stream of air over imaginary dust. And then she was prepared to start the day, after a theatrical, though extremely quiet, mouse-like cough at the imaginary disturbance of her lungs.

Adah decided that her first task of the day would be organizing the books, separating and dividing them into different piles for later. She may have gotten a bit slow, however, when she'd checked the back of one of the books and decided to start reading it backwards from the last page toward the first.

Behind the desk sits nothing but an empty space where Adah used to be; to find her, one would have to go searching through the shelves, or listen carefully to track the telltale sign of one leg being dragged behind the other.

Or they could just wait a moment or two for her to return for another pile of books; she wasn't particularly capable of taking many at a time, so she had to return often.

Finding her return to the desk a well-deserved one (Adah had even bothered to put at least a third of the books in the proper spots, which was her highest number thus far), Adah settled in to stay put for the rest of the day. Written on a piece of paper folded to stand on the desk like a name plaque were the words "Noinipo si esle gnihtyreve; ecaps ytpme dna smota tpecxe stsixe gnihton" and she was bent, nearly halfway if it weren't for the distinct leftward angle of her body, over a large medical book. The tips of the strands of hair falling in front of her created a little alcove, disturbed only when she had to straighten to turn the page.

For lunch today, Adah was nibbling at a too-big-for-her sandwich that she'd picked up yesterday while she was in the village. She found it nicely appropriate that she would probably only be able to finish a third of it, which was about the number of books she allowed to go into their correct spaces. Huh.

The topic of the medical books in question had been narrowed down to books on paralysis. Adah wasn't getting very far at the moment because, true to the topic, she was trying to work her right hand to turn the pages rather than her left. Sometimes she gave up, sometimes she managed. Either way, there were pages of that book that she now knew backwards and forwards, left and right.

Adah was done with medical jargon and theories about her disability (many of them, she decided, were quite ludicrous and obviously written by someone who didn't have the disease); she'd moved on to reading another one of the Eel's Chistmas presents (http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb3/skylieicons/heinlein-C01-1950.jpg). She'd give them to him eventually. Probably today. Even if she hadn't read through them all yet.

So maybe next week.

Hooray! No world ending!

Up early as always; could fall asleep at any moment, but should be around all Wednesday!

River might not see Adah at her usual place behind the desk, but she certainly sensed her presence. Following the flow of words, River moved quietly among the shelf, so that when Adah was about to put a book back an arm extended from the other side, grabbing the book.

And there was a librarian once more.

"Good morning," He greeted her, nodded toward her.

Coming out of his office, he paused. Cocking his head at the sight of River Tam.

That wasn't expected at all.

"Miss Tam."

Right after his last class of the day, Lee made his way into the library, bag over one shoulder and smile on his face. He wasn't trying to be sneaky today.

River's head turned slowly and her eyes fixed on the stranger. Appearantly she wasn't a stranger to him though.

[I have to disappear shortly, but will return in a few hours. Please, let me know what River can pick up from him!]

Not in the slightest.

River Tam, target for termination. No questions other than last known whereabouts asked.

At least, that was before.

"It is you. Shouldn't you be with your Captain Reynold?"

Adah looked up from repositioning the angle of a stack of botany books; there was a long, quiet moment where she made no attempt to hide the fact that she was giving the man a good lookover before she nodded back in acknowledgment, but not necessary agreement, to his greeting. Her left hand started to creep over on the desk, to find her notebook and pen and pull it in closer.

"Miss Price, correct?" He asked, either ignoring or oblivious to the once over.

Adah dragged her eyes up from the pages, to peer over the top of the book and watch the Eel approach. She figured it worked out nicely, because the book kept her small, crooked smile hidden, although she had a pretty strong feeling that he knew it was there, anyway.

River certainly had a good, strong flow of words to go from; in fact, Adah was so busy with a repeated and backwards recitation of a long line of topics associated with the book (despite being in a section that had nothing at all to do with the book), that she was completely caught up in the stream. So when there was another hand suddenly in the equation, Adah jumped, slightly, a jerking sort of action that nearly had her dropping the book. And then she blinked, the words suddenly cut off and tumbling in a crumpled, discarded pile on the floor of her brain, and she realized it was River, and the sudden stiffness faded slightly.

Only slightly, though, because she shouldn't have let herself be surprised like that.

"I don't have a modeling class this semester," he greeted her with, leaning, sprawling almost, against the counter and grinning at her. "Such a shame. Hi there."

It was a question which, thankfully, seemed to warrant another nod. She did straighten up slightly, though, not enough to take the distinctive bend from her back. She wondered if it looked like she was temporarily stuck there, halfway between down and up, because it sort of felt like it. That was fine, though. If he kept answering questions like that, it certainly wasn't like she was going to feel particularly intellectually taxed.

He remained oblivious to these thoughts, of course.

"Excellent. I will be your new librarian. A pleasure to meet you."

Adah lowered the book so that the Eel could see the slight brightening in the angle of her crooked smile. She placed a marker in the pages of the book, set it aside, and then lifted her hand with slightly waggling fingers in a wave back in response to his greeting. She then held up a single finger, the international signal for Hold on a minute before she went to grab her notebook.

"With natural talent such as yours," she wrote, "you were wasting your time in that class anyway. Also, I'm writing because I've been talking enough to rival you lately. I -- and my poor vocal chords -- need a break."

"No one can talk enough to rival me," he bragged lightly, winking. "Give your poor voice a break. I can talk enough for the both of us. How's the library?"

The new librarian. Interesting. Adah quietly looked him over again (drop the man down about five shakes and scar up his face, and he'd look startlingly like a slightly slacking Anatole; she wondered if he knew any French) and then she attempted to straighten out her right shoulder. It wouldn't move and she let out a slight grunt of annoyance. She tried to ignore it enough to give another nod of acknowledgment back.

He smiled faintly, nodding his head in understanding. "I will be in my office if you find need."

"There are a lot of books."
