Library; Wednesday [ 01/09 ]

There was an almost ceremonial feeling in the air as Adah limped into the library; it hadn't been a while since she'd been there, no, of course not, but it had felt like it had been a while since she'd opened it. Not that she ever did an exceptional amount of work while she was there, but she limped in, found the desk, carefully pulling out her chair. She had a seat, centered it carefully, and then settled her bag on one corner. She then meticulously angled the books so that they were balanced with everything else on the desk. She brushed a hand over the surface, leaned in close, and blew a stream of air over imaginary dust. And then she was prepared to start the day, after a theatrical, though extremely quiet, mouse-like cough at the imaginary disturbance of her lungs.

"Every time we talk about pirates, I end up losing my shirt," he said, smiling. "I think that's your grand plan."

Adah loftily shrugged a shoulder. "I stick with what works."

"Because you're smart," he said, nodding. "And cunning."

With a wry little smile and a risk of straining her neck muscles, Adah gave a firm confident nod. She didn't feel anything else needed to be said in response to a statement so true.

And then the muscle did strain, and her head made a sharp jerk to the left. She recovered, her eyes shifting for a moment to the side as an embarrassed blush started to rise. She then returned her eyes steadily, with the intention of pretending it didn't happen. Maybe he wouldn't notice, anyway. But at least she knew he probably wouldn't mind.

He had noticed but he didn't say anything about it. He just kept smiling, waiting for her to feel comfortable again.

"You're smarter than me," he said. He knew she knew that but he still said.

"What does that have to do with anything?" Adah asked with a smirk, a smirk slightly devoid of its usual sharpness as she tried to work the seized nerves into a more submissive state again, without making it obvious that she was struggling.

"Nothing," he said and shrugged. "I just know it makes you smile."

"I don't know if you've noticed," Adah pointed out, very matter-of-factly, "but I sort of haven't ceased smiling since you got here."

"Oh." He'd noticed, of course, but hadn't thought of it so much as just enjoying it. "Well, good. Your smile looks good on you."

"I would hope so," Adah responded. "I'm sure anyone else's smile would most likely look unsettling."

"Smartass," he quipped warmly. "You know what I meant."

Adah wrinkled her nose at the Eel, smirking back. "Of course, but you're just so easy to tease."

"And you tease me at every opportunity," he added. "Not that I mind. At all."

"It's definitely admirable teasing, I promise," Adah said, biting her lip against the persistent smile as she looked over at him. Crazy little feeling that it was, just feeling excited to sit there, talk to him about nothing consequential.

Although perhaps there was something consequential to talk about. Adah's grin suddenly took on a new sharpening. "It's been an interesting day, you know. Guess what I got to see earlier."

She bit her lip, looking up at him with an excited anticipation. She was pretty sure he'd get a kick out of this.

"What'd you get to see earlier?" he asked curiously. "Something good?"

"Very good," Adah nodded assuringly, and then confided, proudly, "I got to see the principal punch the librarian in the face."

Adah was feeling pretty confident that today would go down as one of her most favorite days ever.

That was not what Lee expected to hear and he blinked and his mouth fell open.

"Really?" He started to laugh. "She...really?"

"It was a good punch, too," Adah said with as firm a nod as she could manage. "Didn't even say anything to him, just, pow, right in the kisser. It was....impressive. I'm getting the impression that he's actually not very popular with some of the people around here."

"Huh." Lee hadn't found him so bad. "He thought I was someone else when I met him but otherwise, I didn't find anything wrong with him. What'd you think?"

"I didn't really talk to him," Adah said, with a slight shrug. Then again, she figured that probably went without saying. "After everything I noticed today, though," she added lightly, because there were plenty more things to glean an opinion from other than words, "the only word I can think to use is 'intriguing.' There was something with River, too, on her way out, and I definitely plan on asking."

"Yeah, intriguing is a good word for him," Lee agreed, nodding. "He asked a little about my home but otherwise, just asked about the school. I told him not to take off his shirt."

Adah blinked. "...did that come up as an issue?"

"No," he said, laughing at her reaction. "I was teasing him. He asked me about the school and I told him people like shirts coming off and told him not to just to see him react. He barely reacted at all."

Adah made a thoughtful sound in her throat. That wasn't too terribly surprising; the man seemed pretty impervious to reactions; she could see herself very shortly either coming to admire him for it or getting annoyed by it. "Are you sure," she asked, tilting her head, "that it's that people like shirts coming off, or just that people like yours coming off?"

"I...haven't really thought too much about it," he said, frowning. "Maybe people like mine coming off? I don't know."
