Library; Wednesday [ 12/12 ]

Clutching the tea that she's finding herself increasingly dependent on with the decrease in temperature, Adah limped in to open the library, with enough time to get a decent pile of books back into their places before officially getting things started for the day and settling behind the desk. She even bothered to put the books in the proper places today, if only, merely because she can.

Briefly, Adah had to bite down on her lower lip, a terrible grin starting to pull on the corner of her mouth, but she coughed, just a little, to get a hold of herself before carefully, painstakingly, closing her book. She gave it a small, important shove forward, out of the way, to fold her arms...well, arm...in front of her and she looked up at the Eel with her best look of snooty librarian impatience.

Lee raised his eyebrows at that look, amusement in his eyes but keeping the rest of his features schooled.

"I need...something smart," he said, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "Something...captivating. Something that makes the days better."

Hmmm. Mouth pursing a bit thoughtfully, Adah tilted her head, her eyes drifting off to the side toward some invisible ledger that might have the answer. What could they possibly have that might fit that description?

"Quickly now," he said, deciding to be a pushy customer if she was going to be a snooty librarian. "I've got places to go, people to see, pizzas to eat."

Oh, well. If he was bringing pizza inter the equation. Adah rolled her eyes with fierce dramatics, wilting her shoulders with a terribly heavy sigh. "Well," she said, as if against the idea of talking to him not because she didn't like talking but because she was, clearly, too important to talk to the likes of him, really, "it is a pretty tall order to fill."

"You don't even have ideas?" Lee asked, frowning. "Not even a hint for me?"

"Well," since her hand was already folded, Adah straightened her shoulders again. "What was it again? Smart? Captivating? Makes the day better? And nothing comes to mind for you?"

"Well, there is one thing," he said slowly, nodding. "But, it's not a book. It's...more than a book. Do you think I'd find that here?"

"It's a library," Adah reminded him pointedly. "Mostly books, sorry."

She was...incredibly proud of her ability to keep from grinning at the moment.

"But, if I can't find this thing, I might have to leave," Lee said, sighing heavily.

A comment like that left Adah pausing for a moment to decide whether this was a bluff she felt she was willing to call. If she did call it, she'd actually want him to leave, because she'd be disappointed if he buckled. But then he would leave.

Curses. But she knew there was at least one reason she liked this guy so damn much, even if it was just pure dumb luck.

"...Well," she said, finally, carefully slowly, "there might be one thing. But I'm not sure you're qualified."

"How do you know if you don't know my qualifications?" Lee retorted quickly and leaned against the desk. "I could be very qualified."

It would take a will of steel to not smirk at that; unfortunately, Adah had a small relapse into a small snort of laugh that she tried her best to cover it with an intake of breath to resettle on her expectant look, waiting to hear these apparently mindblowing qualifications.

"Well, I'm entertaining," he said, counting off on his fingers. "And I smell good. I have soft pillows. I know lots of funny stories. I like books. I like you," he said, slipping that in there quickly. "I like pizza and I'm always willing to share. I'm dependable, reliable and trustworthy. I'm strong mentally and physically. And I'm adaptable and willing to learn."

"Those...are fairly promising," Adah agreed with a lopsided bob of her head. And, no, mentioning her hadn't slipped under her radar and, of course, had worked very much to his advantage. "I have to admit. With a list like that, maybe what you're looking for is yourself."

And, my, that was quite...Zen, wasn't it?

"But, I've already got myself," he answered. "I see myself everyday. Myself is pretty boring. No, I'm looking for...something else. Better. Smarter than me."

Grinning slightly, Adah bit her lip. Apparently, she could add 'deeper' to that list of what he was looking for, too, and could probably produce a wet mop and still be on the right track. "I can think," she said, carefully, the grin starting to leak out a bit uncontrollably at the the moment, "of perhaps one thing..."

"Can you?" He leaned closer, interesting. "Tell me."

"Sometimes," Adah drawled, grinning as she leaned forward a little herself, arching her neck up so that their distance was significantly reduced, "you know, the most obvious answers are right under your nose."

"I sure do hope you mean literally under my nose," he said, looking down at her and smiling.

"Look at that," Adah's smile was a little bordering on a beam. "You are smart. I had some doubts."

"I am smart," he said, sliding down until she wasn't under his nose anymore but looking at him from a slight distance. "Sometimes, I'm just slow. Did I qualify enough?"

"You saw just right through my riddle, so..." Adah trailed off, grinning. "I suppose you squeak by well enough."

"Good for me," he said and moved a little closer, just barely, barely not touching. "Hi there."

And what else could Adah say to that other than "hello," holding her breath slightly and seeing only his eyes but thinking of something else?
