Library [11/19]

Sam had very fond memories of working in the library during high school. When he remembered it was Monday, the day he'd usually had his shift, he headed down to the library and situated himself behind the desk with a small stack of books, and a look that dared anyone to try to get him to leave.

Sam smiled. "Yeah, we're still a team. Never really could get the hang of working without you," he said. "And somebody's got to make sure you don't get killed, 'cause God knows you can't do it for yourself."

"I bet you still get into more trouble than I do," Dean declared.

"I still get choked more," Sam admitted. "But we're pretty equal on the trouble scale."

"A matched set, huh?" Dean said with a little grin and then got more serious when he asked, "So college wasn't all that great after all?"

"It wasn't so bad. I don't regret going," Sam said. "But...it wasn't the transformation to normalcy that I thought it would be."

Dean shook his head. "I'm never going to understand the hard-on you get for normal. We wouldn't be who we are if we were quote, unquote 'normal.'"

"I know," Sam said, shrugging. "I wanted to see what kind of person I could be if I wasn't me."

"You do realise that makes absolutely no sense."

"Yes, it does," Sam replied. "I wanted to see if being normal would make me a better person."

"Sammy, you're one of the best people I know," Dean told him. "Okay, also a giantic pain in my butt a lot of the time, but..."

"I know," Sam said, smiling softly. "I mean, I went to school, and it didn't make me any different. I was just me, away from you, and Dad, and Zoe and Grace. And it sucked."

"I'm pretty sure I've pointed that out to you that it would," Dean couldn't resist told you so'ing.

"Yeah, you did. But there was a difference between me just listening to you, and me finding that out on my own," Sam said. "Then I could come back without any regrets."

"What, my word's not good enough for you?" Dean joked.

"It is now," Sam replied.

"Slow learner."

"Not as slow as you, especially when it comes to parenting."

"Dude, I totally helped raise you and you didn't turn out so bad," Dean shot back before the comment really sunk in. "Wait, that's the second time someone from the future's mentioned me having a kid..."

Sam grinned. "That's because you do have one, sort of. You and Alec kind of adopted a kid."

Dean stared at his brother. "Me and Alec...?"

"Yeah. You rescued him from Manticore, and then you got attached to him, so you guys kept him." Sam snickered to himself. "I make him sound like a pet, sorry."

"Huh," Dean said, a slow smile taking over his face. "So if you and I are hunting together and I'm still with Alec, does that mean the two of you are finally getting along?"

"Oh hell no," Sam replied, laughing. "But we haven't tried to beat each other up in a long time."

"Well that's good. Have to set a good example for the kid and all. Speaking of which, am I an uncle too?"

Sam shook his head. "No, just a dad. I haven't had as much luck in that area as you have."
