Library [11/19]

Sam had very fond memories of working in the library during high school. When he remembered it was Monday, the day he'd usually had his shift, he headed down to the library and situated himself behind the desk with a small stack of books, and a look that dared anyone to try to get him to leave.

"Yeah. You rescued him from Manticore, and then you got attached to him, so you guys kept him." Sam snickered to himself. "I make him sound like a pet, sorry."

"Huh," Dean said, a slow smile taking over his face. "So if you and I are hunting together and I'm still with Alec, does that mean the two of you are finally getting along?"

"Oh hell no," Sam replied, laughing. "But we haven't tried to beat each other up in a long time."

"Well that's good. Have to set a good example for the kid and all. Speaking of which, am I an uncle too?"

Sam shook his head. "No, just a dad. I haven't had as much luck in that area as you have."

"You should check and see if older Dawn is seeing anyone -- the way she was talking, I don't think so."

Sam shifted a little in his seat, and started looking interested in his research again. "I don't know. We talked but...it was awkward. I don't think she thinks of me like that anymore."

"Or she doesn't think you think of her like that anymore," Dean countered.

"Dude, I totally think of her like that, all the time," Sam said. "It's Dawn. I've never stopped thinking of her like that."

"I'm not the one you should be telling that to."

"I don't want to make things more awkward between us," Sam replied. "We had a good talk yesterday, and I'm thinking we should keep things like that for a while before I make a move."

Dean facepalmed. "Dude, have you learned anything in the past 20 years? I could have sworn we had this same conversation last year about Dawn before you decided to be a complete idiot and ask a pirate to call you a eunuch."

"I've learned that I don't need to have someone in my life like Dawn, and to take what friendships I can get," Sam said. It was safer that way, after all."

Dean stared at him. "Okay, now I want to go and kick older me's ass because it's obvious he's been falling down on the job if that's what he's letting you settle for."

"Older you knows the things we've been through," Sam pointed out. "He does his job just fine."

"Okay, yeah, you don't need someone in your life -- you've got your family after all. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try for it anyway."

"With how dangerous our lives are? Yeah, I shouldn't try for it," Sam replied.

"Dawn's kinda in the business already," Dean pointed out.

"Which means she's already in enough danger all on her own," Sam pointed out in return.

"So by that logic, older me should send Alec and the kid packing," Dean said. "And Dad should totally dump Zoe."

"It's different for you guys," Sam explained. "I can't watch people I care about get hurt. I just can't. And if that means missing out on a relationship, then it's a price I'm willing to pay."

"Okay, I know that older me can't be sitting back and letting you think that," Dean insisted.

"No, older you sounds almost exactly like you do now," Sam replied. "I just ignore him too."

"Dude, you're totally being a bad example to your nephew."

Sam laughed. "He knows better than to not listen to you."
