Communication - Thursday, Period 5

"As I told you last week, this week's class is about public speaking. Public speaking is an important part of communication in that it trains you to organise your thoughts effectively and allows you practice at speaking in front of people you otherwise wouldn't be comfortable with.

If you haven't prepared your speech and can't get it done by the time it's your turn to speak, then this week you'll be getting a lesson in improvisation. If you have a serious problem with this assignment, I'll be at the back of the room. Feel free to come and speak with me."

Chris listened attentively to all the speeches while mentally rehearsing his own.

John had forgotten about assignments this week. While others took their turns, he decided on a topic he could improvise.

Jack completely forgot about this. Crap. He scrambled for a topic idea.

Demyx might have "eep!"ed quietly, then covered his head with his arms and tried to melt into the desk. Forgot? Him? Naturally.

John improvised a speech about why Daylight Savings Time is completely unnecessary. This mostly involved how it messed up his internal clock rather than actual, you know, research.

Andrew hadn't prepared anything, so he totally got up and talked about the first thing that came to mind: dead languages. Specifically, he talked about a poem he had just translated from Coptic Egyptian about two male warrior lovers.

He drew diagrams on the board to illustrate some of the finer points.

For two minutes, Jeff held a speech on the subject of women's breasts that was so disjointed, random and enthusiastic as to be, dare it be said, legendary.

Unfortunately, this speech was simply too legendary for this comment and must hence be left to the imagination.

It really was quite good, though.

Hoshi gave a speech about the life and work of Henry Archer, the noted engineer from her world who developed the NX-01. She may have mentioned Henry's good-looking son Jonathon a few times since he was a test pilot for the program. Okay, so she mentioned Jonathon about ten times and her cheeks turned pink every time his name came up.

Summer totally gave an improvised speech about how to make coffee. Of course, her version of making coffee involved getting the roomie to do it or going to The Perk to buy some.

Anemone gave a quick speech on the history and basic physics behind a sport from her timeline called 'lifting'.

It was mostly improvised, but she had brought her refboard with her to use as a prop.

Demyx spent most of his speech time flailing, but managed to somehow explain something about how music was a universal language.

Cassandra sort of didn't know that she was supposed to be nervous. She had done a little preparation and her speech was about non-verbal communication.

Well, that's what it was about, not what she called it. Cassandra spent most of her time talking about "watching people". She provided lots and lots of demonstration of the differences between afraid and angry and anxious and similar emotions which were hard to differentiate.

Carmela gives a speech on how various alien cultures from her Universe view chocolate. Depending on who you talk to, chocolate can be more than just a delicious snack food- for some it's a controlled substance, for others it's a collectors item. One point she's sure to make is that if you go off exploring other planets, bring some chocolate- still in the wrapper of course, since mint condition is always preferable- to use as a bargaining tool. If you find yourself being chased by, say, a team of bounty hunters? That bar of Valrhona Caraïbe Grand Cru? Might just save your life.

Naminé, paler than usual, stood in front of the class and read directly from her note cards about different types of artwork. She didn't look up until she was finished, and she was barely audible, but it was still a speech.

Rodney had prepared a lecture speech on the nature of black holes. He even had a Power Point presentation to go with it. It was probably incomprehensible to most of the class and it would have been quite boring if not for the fact that Rodney tended to talk with his hands.

Jeff nearly tripped over himself making his way to the back of the class.

"I left my brain at home!" he greeted her. Pause. "Not in a jar! I don't keep my brain in a jar, obviously, or my notes. Why would I keep my notes with my brain in a jar? That would just be mad."
