Communication - Thursday, Period 5

"As I told you last week, this week's class is about public speaking. Public speaking is an important part of communication in that it trains you to organise your thoughts effectively and allows you practice at speaking in front of people you otherwise wouldn't be comfortable with.

If you haven't prepared your speech and can't get it done by the time it's your turn to speak, then this week you'll be getting a lesson in improvisation. If you have a serious problem with this assignment, I'll be at the back of the room. Feel free to come and speak with me."

She's at the back of the classroom with a piece of paper and a pen taking notes.

Jeff nearly tripped over himself making his way to the back of the class.

"I left my brain at home!" he greeted her. Pause. "Not in a jar! I don't keep my brain in a jar, obviously, or my notes. Why would I keep my notes with my brain in a jar? That would just be mad."

"Some of the most interesting people I know are mad," Thursday replied, not having ever fully experienced a Jeff moment. "If you didn't prepare anything, you're welcome to improvise."

"No, no, no, no," Jeff rambled, "That would be very bad. Improvising, I mean, not so much the mad. I wouldn't want to insult your friends! I just also wouldn't want to give anyone whiplash."

"Whiplash?" Oh look, she was getting it from Jeff's style of talking anyway. Funny that.

"You know, sometimes you're talking to someone--" Jeff was trying very hard not to look at Thursday, as looking at women tended to make this worse, "Or a woman, and it gets very lengthy, and you start to... associate. That's when the conversational whiplash effect strikes."

"I see." She only understood because of knowing the Cat Formerly Known As Cheshire for so long. In fact, Thursday thought that the Cat and Jeff would probably get along quite well and muddle each other until the end of time if given half a chance. "What if you focus on one of your male friends in the class and pretend you're talking to him instead? Would that help?"

Jeff had a very important point about that. "But what if I end up saying 'breasts' accidentally?"

"The speech can be about anything you'd like as long as it's kept clean, breasts included."

His eyes finally flicked to her... face. "Breasts," he repeated, solemnly.

She managed to keep a straight face. In retrospect, she wasn't entirely sure how. "Yes. Women have them. Some men have them too. If you think you can talk to the class about breasts for two minutes, you're welcome to."

Jeff nodded slowly. "Breasts," he said again, then turned back towards the class.

This was going to be interesting.

Naminé smiled tentatively at her new professor. "I got your letter," she said. "It was very kind of you, to reply. I hoped that you wouldn't mind me sending so many of them, last week."
