Alternative Tactics, Wednesday First Period 24/10

It was Danger Shop time again.

Except Kerrigan wasn't wearing any armor.

That would've been the first tip-off right there.

"Thanks to certain students in this class," she said, crossing her arms, "We have a slight change in the curriculum today. We are going to be concerned with diplomacy and its advantages in the field."

She didn't sound like she felt it had any advantages in the field of all places.

"Since I still believe we all learn by doing, that means we're using the sim to place you in a situation where you will have to negotiate yourself out or die. As this class is his particular gift to us, Adama ~~if he is here~~ can go first. And show you all how it's done."

If you thought she was smirking, you thought wrong.

Z clutched her com link and glanced nervously back and forth between the two armies. Yeah, this seemed like a great idea.

"What is it with all of you kids out there?!" The Terran commander sounded quite aggravated. To put it mildly.

"Hi, there," said Z. "Um, I'm here for a class." Honesty was, after all, the best policy.

"...You're having class out on the battlefield, girl?!"

"Yes, sir," said Z. "Cadet Elizabeth Delgado, Space Patrol Delta, sir, and my assignment is to ~~get out of here alive~~ stop this battle, sir. So, um, why are you fighting, exactly?"

"See those Protoss over there?" There was a large army of creatures in yellow armor up ahead. "They're here to incinerate the surface of our entire planet! We can't let that happen!"

"Okay," Z said slowly. "Sir? Why do the Protoss want to incinerate the surface of your planet?" There was always a reason. Sometimes it was a crazy reason, but there was always a reason.

"They think it's gonna help them destroy the Zerg. We've already lost four planets this way!"

Z sighed. Great. "First off, I have to ask you, do you have a Zerg problem? And if so, what do you intend to do about it, as you're apparently not okay with the place being nuked from orbit?"

"There might be a mild infestation, but nothing we can't handle!" the man argued hotly, "We got Goliaths down here, we can ferret those things out like THAT!"

"All right," said Z, "and have you tried telling the, er, Protoss that you have the situation under control?"

"We have! They barely pick up our signals an' they insist on us leavin'! We are NOT gonna abandon our homes!"

Great. Just great. "All right, sir, I'm going to try to talk to them. You and your men just sit tight for the time being, okay?"

"Good luck, girl." He didn't sound like he thought she was going to have any.

"Thanks," Z muttered, and started fiddling with her com unit in hopes of the other side's leader magically appearing somehow.

And she was not disappointed. "EN TARO ADUN, TERRAN."

"If that's a greeting," Z said, "En taro adun to you, as well. If it's a grievous insult, I take it back, and good morning. Or afternoon. Whatever it is here. I'm Cadet Elizabeth Delgado of Space Patrol Delta, and I'm here to broker a peaceful negotiation to end these hostilities. I've already heard their take on it, now let's hear yours, please, sir." Or ma'am? Honorable herm? Z had no idea.

"I AM PROTOSS EXECUTOR ARTANIS," the Protoss declared, "WE ARE HERE TO REMOVE THE ZERG BLIGHT OFF THE SKIN OF THE UNIVERSE. YOU ARE TO EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY."

"I'm afraid I can't do that, Executor Artanis," Z said. "Like I said before, I'm here to bring a peaceful end to this. Now, I'm not arguing that the Zerg should be destroyed, but the Terrans claim to have the situation under control. They say they can destroy the infestation on their own, without the whole planet being destroyed."

"THE TERRANS ARE HIGH-MINDED ABOVE THEIR STATURE." Artanis wasn't particularly fond of Terrans. "YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE SITUATION. THEY MUST BE BURNED AWAY AT THE SOURCE."

Z ignored the insult to Terrans, as it was unhelpful. "Executor Artanis, you've barged in here with the intent to destroy their home. And, apparently, them. And I'm told this isn't the first time this has happened You can see how they would take issue with that, surely?"

"IT IS NO MATTER." He really didn't care much for their opinions. It's just that the previous Executor had been... fond... of them. "THE ZERG MUST BE DESTROYED."

"And no one is arguing that. But surely we can destroy the Zerg without destroying the rest of the planet, too. It's overkill, and a waste of resources."

"IT DOES NOT COST US A GREAT DEAL OF RESOURCES," Artanis informed her proudly. "IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE CERTAIN."

Damn. "Well, yeah, burning down my house will get rid of the rats, but then I don't have a house. It's not very practical, Executor. Surely you can understand that. If you destroy everywhere the Zerg could be, just to be sure, you'll have to destroy every habitable planet in the entire universe."
