Alternative Tactics, Wednesday First Period 24/10

It was Danger Shop time again.

Except Kerrigan wasn't wearing any armor.

That would've been the first tip-off right there.

"Thanks to certain students in this class," she said, crossing her arms, "We have a slight change in the curriculum today. We are going to be concerned with diplomacy and its advantages in the field."

She didn't sound like she felt it had any advantages in the field of all places.

"Since I still believe we all learn by doing, that means we're using the sim to place you in a situation where you will have to negotiate yourself out or die. As this class is his particular gift to us, Adama ~~if he is here~~ can go first. And show you all how it's done."

If you thought she was smirking, you thought wrong.

Z ignored the insult to Terrans, as it was unhelpful. "Executor Artanis, you've barged in here with the intent to destroy their home. And, apparently, them. And I'm told this isn't the first time this has happened You can see how they would take issue with that, surely?"

"IT IS NO MATTER." He really didn't care much for their opinions. It's just that the previous Executor had been... fond... of them. "THE ZERG MUST BE DESTROYED."

"And no one is arguing that. But surely we can destroy the Zerg without destroying the rest of the planet, too. It's overkill, and a waste of resources."

"IT DOES NOT COST US A GREAT DEAL OF RESOURCES," Artanis informed her proudly. "IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE CERTAIN."

Damn. "Well, yeah, burning down my house will get rid of the rats, but then I don't have a house. It's not very practical, Executor. Surely you can understand that. If you destroy everywhere the Zerg could be, just to be sure, you'll have to destroy every habitable planet in the entire universe."

"THE ZERG ARE HERE," the Executor countered, "IF WE RAZE THIS PLANET, THEY MIGHT BE GONE ENTIRELY."

They wouldn't.

"I find that highly unlikely, Executor. I think you'll find some other planet you have to raze. And another, and another. And more people will die, and it will never end. Or, you can let the people of this world deal with the infestation on their own. If they can't, maybe they could call on you to assist, by which I mean not destroy everything."

"WE WILL RAZE EVERY PLANET IF WE MUST," Artanis declared with conviction, "THE ZERG SCOURGE CAN NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN FREE."

She would have had far more luck with his predecessor.

Great. "But what about the people on those planets? What about your planet? Will you destroy it, too?"

That was a pause.

"THE ZERG WILL NOT REACH AIUR."

Z restrained herself from saying, 'If you say so,' and said instead, "But theoretically. If they did, how would you feel about some guys showing up to destroy your whole planet when you had the situation totally under control?"

"THIS SITUATION WOULD NOT OCCUR."

It sounded a little like 'does not compute'.

"This is a hypothetical, Executor Artanis," Z said. "Hypothetically, how would you feel if someone wanted to blow up your planet?" Hey, maybe if she broke his brain they'd go home?

"THEY WOULD FAIL."

Cue facepalming all around, now.

"That's what they said on Sirius, too, when Gruumm came. They were wiped out. Hey," Z said, acting enlightened. "I have a crazy idea. Why don't you work with the Terrans to help them get rid of the Zerg on this world. Without destroying everything."

"THIS IS AN IMPOSSIBLE REQUEST," the Exector informed her, "THE PLANET MUST BE PURGED ENTIRELY FOR US TO BE CERTAIN THAT THE ZERG HORDE HAS BEEN ANNIHILATED."

"Executor, in this case, I think a little bit of uncertainty is better than a whole lot of misery." Z took a deep breath. "Let me tell you a little story about where I come from, because I'm not from around here. A great hero of my people destroyed all the evil in the galaxy. All of it. He was sure. As sure as you are that destroying this planet will stop the Zerg. And do you know what happened? The evil came back. You can never be certain."

"THIS IS NOT A MATTER OF DEBATE," the Executor replied, "WE MUST DESTROY THE ZERG. IF WE FAIL HERE, WE SHALL SUCCEED ANOTHER DAY. EN TARO ADUN."

"Wait! Wait!" Z said. "If you do that more people will die and be driven from their homes! You're not being the good guys here!"

"THERE ARE A MILLION STARS IN THIS GALAXY," the Executor spoke haughtily, "WE SHALL DO AS WE MUST. EVACUATE."

And Z...kind of snapped. "HOW?" she screamed into her com link. "HOW DO YOU PROPOSE WE EVACUATE? You're already HERE with GUNS and you WON'T COOPERATE!"

"YOU WILL TAKE YOUR SHIPS AND REMOVE YOURSELVES AT ONCE OR BE DESTROYED," the Executor told her.

And then blinked off the com.

In the distance, tanks were moving.

Z considered trying to rig the com to play "Me" by Sydney Drew at the Protoss Executor, but didn't have that degree of skill with the thing. So she recontacted the Terran commander. "Yeah, they're about to kill us all unless we evacuate immediately in the ships I, for one, don't have. I tried," she said in a completely toneless voice.

"I bet you tried, girl," the Terran commander replied, sounding tired. "We'll try and airlift you outta here if we can."

"Sir, if you can run, now would be the time to do it," she said quietly. "I've seen what happens when someone sets themselves to destroy a planet." Of course, Gruumm was ABSOLUTE EVIL, which these Protoss seemed convinced they were not, but the end result was the same.
