Modern Feminism: From Susan B Anthony to Bea Arthur - Second Period - 09/05

As the students filed into the classroom, a certain song played on repeat until everyone was there. And then for a little while longer because it amused Deadpool so very much.

"Oh Bea, is there anything you can't do?" He sighed dreamily, gazing off at a spot that very well might be a thought bubble with her image in it, but that's neither here nor there.

"Gooooood morning kiddies! And welcome to Modern Feminism! I hope you're all here to learn about the women who made our lives so much easier. Your lives. The womenfolk. As I am of the Y chromosome persuasion." Deadpool coughed awkwardly, vaguely wondering if having a husband made him teaching this class okay with the womenfolk.

Okay, so he just liked the phrase womenfolk.

(Womenfolk. Heh.)

"Today, being the first day, is, as always, a blow off. Because if I didn't make it so, I'd have to egg my own house," He told them seriously. "So let's get started on the condescending intro activities and introduce ourselves! Tell everyone your name, why you're here, why Bea Arthur is a goddess among women, and what your strong womyn-- that's with a y, by the way-- name is."

"My name is Haku. I am here because I signed up for this class, I've never heard of a religion worshipping a B. Arthur, but Professor Deadpool seems to be it's only suplicant and again my name is Haku."

Demyx waved at Deadpool. "I'm Demyx; I'm here so I can drive Professor Deadpool's car again. This is the right class for that, right?" He pulled a much-battered printout out of a pocket and studied it. "...Oh, no, different subject. Anyway! Um, I'm Demyx, I don't know who the Bee woman is, and I'm a boy - I don't have a girly name. Marluxia's kinda girly, though."

"My name is Jenny Sparks, I'm here because my schedule got hacked, Bea Arthur is a goddess among women because the teacher said so, and I say again, my name is Jenny Sparks. I don't sodding need another."

"I'm T.R. Wexler, which, by the way, is my strong woman name, but everyone calls me Turtle, because T.R. is too intimidating for most people. I'm here because one, I can finally take a class with Mister Deadpool and two, I intend to be a modern feminist, so I might as well do it properly."

Yes, she had full confidence that she could learn that from him. Go figure.

"And I still have no idea who Bea Arthur is. But hopefully that will change?"

"I'm Evie Carnahan. Evelyn! Evelyn Carnahan, and that's my stronger name. I'm here because I want to help women get the vote in England, without having to go on a hunger strike when I get back to 1917, and because Professor Deadpool taught me how to drive! So he's very empowering." Evie drew a deep breath. "And I believe Bea Arthur is a goddess among women because, um. Because." She frowned. "She has very good posture? And is tall? And she has her own song."

"I'm Jeff," Jeff said, looking mildly confused as always, "My mother's enrolled me in things again, and Bea Arthur is extraordinarily well preserved for a woman her age. Er, I'm not entirely certain I have a womyn name, I think you need to have breasts for that."

He paused.

"...Jeffina."

"My name is Jo Harvelle, the class seemed interesting, wasn't she in the Space Battle's Holiday Special, and my name is Jo."

There was no way in hell she was telling anyone her full name, teacher or no. Stupid Little Women.

Faile didn't understand half of what Deadpool was asking about so she listened carefully to the others in class as they answered and based hers on that.

"My name is Zarine Bashere and I am here to learn about modern feminism. I do not know who B-Arthur is, but if you say she is a goddess among women I will believed you." This last one was actually easy for Faile. "My strong woman name will be Faile. It means falcon in the old tongue."

"I'm Mac," she said, straight to the point as usual. "I really don't know anything about Bea Arthur..." But she'll probably look her up on Wikipedia later. "And my real name is overly feminine enough, without any alterations."

"I'm Dawn, and I signed up for the class because women are stronger than people think and I wanted to see why, I think Bea Arthur kind of looks like my friend Xander in a dress, which maybe isn't a bad thing, and I don't know how to pick a strong womyn name."

"My name's Meg. I took this class because I thought the subject was interesting. Bea's awesome because, um, she didn't take any crap from Rue McClanahan. And I kinda like my own name." she said. "Meg Manning has got that cool alliteration going on."

"My name is Beauty Huston, and I'm here because I thought a class about important women sounded interesting. And because it's not the sort of thing they teach where I come from." She hesitated, because now she was moving on to the hard questions. "I...am afraid I've never heard of Bea Arthur, but as her name is in the class title, she must be very important. And so I'm looking forward to learning about her. I'm afraid I also don't understand what you mean by a strong woman name, or why it has to be spelled with a 'y'. Although my name is spelled with a 'y', so is that all right then?"

"My name is Jack Burton. I don't know how I ended up in this class or who this Bee Author is or why someone wrote a book about bees. And that Jackie-O sounds like a strong woman."

Jude got his thinky face on.

"My name's Jude. I'm here 'cause I totally respect women - especially my girlfriend -" Now why did that sound suspiciously like 'please don't kill me'? "- Bea Arthur's just, like, made of awesome, and . . . what was the last question?"

"My name is Robin, and I think that makes a good girl name too, and Bea Arthur always seemed like she was a tough woman, which is cool as long as she's not mean, and I'm taking this class because I'm a modern kind of guy."

"I'm Rodney McKay and I originally enrolled in this class because I thought it would be a good place to meet girls but shortly thereafter, I started dating this really great girl so now I'm just here to learn about Feminism." Rodney was nothing if not honest. "Bea Arthur is a goddess because my little sister really likes The Golden Girls and anything that keeps her occupied and away from me is a plus in my book. And I don't need a strong woman name," he said quickly. There was no way he wanted to bring up his first name.
