Spying Week 7, Period 1

"Morning everyone," Aly said, looking tired but mainly pissed off by the earlier announcements.  She glanced around the class.  "Here's the thing.  Don't bait her.  Don't taunt her.  Don't draw her attention down to yourself.  If she calls you into her office, don't go.  I'll take responsibility.  Any question?"

After any questions were answered, she continued.  "Okay, we've spent six weeks talking about spying and skills a spy has.  Today I want to talk about what a spy does.  When's spying the right thing to do?  When is it too dangerous?  When is it - or is it ever unethical?  And do any of these answers change depending upon who you're reporting to?"

She smiled.  "I meant what I said at the beginning of class.  If there are any problems let me know.  Other than that, you guys were a pleasure.  Thank you for being in my class and I hope to see you all again future classes or in my office hours."

"I'm okay," Aly replied softly. "Are you staying away from her?"

"You sure about that?" Seely asked. He totally didn't glance in Aravis's direction. Really. "I am now."

"I'm absolutely positive," Aly replied. "She overestimates her effect." Wow, that was a lie. "And thank you. At this point, I don't trust mere tauntings - or more violent approaches - to do anything more than drive her insane. More insane."

"She can do magic without the wand," Aly murmured to keep him from being overconfident if the situation came up.

It was probably a dumb move, but he wasn't being very intelligent this morning (http://umbitch.livejournal.com/6046.html?thread=729758#t729758) as Zuko quietly slipped into the back of the class, a magpie sitting on his shoulder. His face was pale and drawn, his hand pressing against his chest where the wound didn't seem to want to stop bleeding. He wasn't staying, but he needed to make sure Aly was alright. Seeing she was, he quickly tried to slip away.

Trick alerted her to his presence and Aly turned immediately, moving quickly towards Zuko. Her face grew hard and angry she looked at him. "Are you okay other than that?" she asked quietly, voice gentle.

He merely nodded, his fingers holding on tightly to his shirt, trying to keep it closed over the wound even as his front was coloured red. "She said she hurt you."

She could hardly breathe, she was so absolutely furious at Umbridge. She didn't even pay attention to the bird or the blood and wrapped her arms around him gently, giving him a hug without jostling him more. "I'm okay," she said softly, letting him go. "You need the clinic though."

"I'm fine," he protested weakly, but he somehow failed to look shocked at getting hugged. Mel settled back on his shoulder as soon as Aly let go.

Aly raised an eyebrow, continuing to try to give off a calm impression, keeping her anger under the surface. "I know what she did," she said quietly. "You're not fine. Come on, let's go."

Faile waited until no one else was talking to Aly before approaching.

Faile smiled back and took a step closer. "It didn't work," she said quietly. "She is too distrustful. And after listening to the radio and what you've said, I will not go back."

She took a breath, more than a little relieved, but not being obvious about it. "I'm glad. It was a worthy try but not your usual target."

Faile shrugged, looking a little disappointed. "I was hoping that with everyone against her she would want someone to talk to, but she only asked questions about me and thought I was there for a favor."

Rikku walked up to Aly after class, hesitantly. "I'm not provoking her," she said quickly. "I've been telling people not to. She's ... I think maybe she's kinda crazy, yeah?"

"She's more than kinda crazy," Aly said quietly. "And I didn't think you were."

"No, I know. Just ... wanted to say it." Rikku shivered. "She kinda gives me the creeps. I think she likes it. Hurting people, I mean."

She bit her lip. "I, uh, I want to help. If I can. I mean. I'm not nibbing her or anything, but ... I've fought way scarier stuff than her before. If it comes to that. I know I kinda don't look it, but I really can fight."

Aly nodded, her eyes darkening. "She does. She gets pleasure out of it." Aly rubbed the back of her neck. "I wouldn't ever disbelieve your fighting skills. You're Wade's minion after all, right? Let me see what the plan turns into, and I'll keep it in mind. Most of you are more than capable. I'm good with it."

"That's ... what kinda stopped me. She laughed about it and I realized ... just pestering her was only gonna make her worse, you know?" Rikku nodded seriously. "I ... there are probably plans and all that, I just wanted to offer to help. I kinda had to save the world once. And it sucked. We were gonna start a club for it."
