Spying Week 7, Period 1

"Morning everyone," Aly said, looking tired but mainly pissed off by the earlier announcements. She glanced around the class. "Here's the thing. Don't bait her. Don't taunt her. Don't draw her attention down to yourself. If she calls you into her office, don't go. I'll take responsibility. Any question?"

After any questions were answered, she continued. "Okay, we've spent six weeks talking about spying and skills a spy has. Today I want to talk about what a spy does. When's spying the right thing to do? When is it too dangerous? When is it - or is it ever unethical? And do any of these answers change depending upon who you're reporting to?"

She smiled. "I meant what I said at the beginning of class. If there are any problems let me know. Other than that, you guys were a pleasure. Thank you for being in my class and I hope to see you all again future classes or in my office hours."

It was probably a dumb move, but he wasn't being very intelligent this morning (http://umbitch.livejournal.com/6046.html?thread=729758#t729758) as Zuko quietly slipped into the back of the class, a magpie sitting on his shoulder. His face was pale and drawn, his hand pressing against his chest where the wound didn't seem to want to stop bleeding. He wasn't staying, but he needed to make sure Aly was alright. Seeing she was, he quickly tried to slip away.

Trick alerted her to his presence and Aly turned immediately, moving quickly towards Zuko. Her face grew hard and angry she looked at him. "Are you okay other than that?" she asked quietly, voice gentle.

He merely nodded, his fingers holding on tightly to his shirt, trying to keep it closed over the wound even as his front was coloured red. "She said she hurt you."

She could hardly breathe, she was so absolutely furious at Umbridge. She didn't even pay attention to the bird or the blood and wrapped her arms around him gently, giving him a hug without jostling him more. "I'm okay," she said softly, letting him go. "You need the clinic though."

"I'm fine," he protested weakly, but he somehow failed to look shocked at getting hugged. Mel settled back on his shoulder as soon as Aly let go.

Aly raised an eyebrow, continuing to try to give off a calm impression, keeping her anger under the surface. "I know what she did," she said quietly. "You're not fine. Come on, let's go."

He didn't move. "I'm not going to the clinic," he said stubbornly. Mel cawed in protest.

"You need someone to look at the curse wound," she said, not leaving an option in her voice. "Which means the clinic."

Mainly because she didn't think giving him whiskey while she bandaged it was a good idea.

He stayed still, looking uncertain for an instant. "Katara."

There was an instant of surprise that broke through Aly's rage. "That would work. Where is she?"

"I don-"

Mel cawed and took off from his shoulder, swooping into the hall.

"Um... I think that way?"

She nodded and realised that letting herself worry about Zuko was just about the only thing stopping her from breaking her promise to Wade that she wouldn't confront Umbridge by herself. Aly started following the bird, not obviously in a position to support Zuko, but ready to instantly more to do so.

"Interesting bird, you have there," she murmured, hoping to take his mind off the injury.

His face was set, apparently he had too much pride to try to show his pain even if he couldn't quite keep it out of his eyes. "It's Mel."

Aly couldn't help a tiny smile though her eyes were still full of worry as she glanced at Zuko and the blood covering him. "Appropriate."

Zuko had no idea what that would be appropriate. It was annoying at best. "She tried to fly through a window."

"They can't see the glass," she said, remembering a bird she'd known. "It's always a surprise to them."

Zuko winced as Mel reached the doors, but she lucked picked the open side to fly out. "I'm keeping her away from windows," he muttered, his voice tight.

"Not a bad idea," Aly replied. "How long has she been like this?"

"Monday evening," he made a face, wondering if Mel really knew where she was taking them as she headed through the school gates.

Aly didn't smile. She really, really didn't. She was far too angry and worried to do so. It was slightly amusing though.

Through the school gates worked for her. If Katara wasn't down there, at least the Clinic was.

She glanced over at Zuko. "What did she call you into her office for?"

Zuko shrugged a shoulder and instantly regretted the movement. He nervously licked his lips and drew in a breath. "She didn't seem to know what classes I was following."

Aly's jaw clenched even as she noticed his reaction to the movement and she remembered how much it had hurt to walk home. Mentally cursing again her lack of healing Gift, she nodded. "I'm sorry," she said softly.

He blinked. "Why?"

"It's taken too long to take care of this," Aly said, avoiding the reality of her response.

"Things never go as fast as we want them to," Zuko replied quietly.
