Spying Week 7, Period 1

"Morning everyone," Aly said, looking tired but mainly pissed off by the earlier announcements.  She glanced around the class.  "Here's the thing.  Don't bait her.  Don't taunt her.  Don't draw her attention down to yourself.  If she calls you into her office, don't go.  I'll take responsibility.  Any question?"

After any questions were answered, she continued.  "Okay, we've spent six weeks talking about spying and skills a spy has.  Today I want to talk about what a spy does.  When's spying the right thing to do?  When is it too dangerous?  When is it - or is it ever unethical?  And do any of these answers change depending upon who you're reporting to?"

She smiled.  "I meant what I said at the beginning of class.  If there are any problems let me know.  Other than that, you guys were a pleasure.  Thank you for being in my class and I hope to see you all again future classes or in my office hours."

Rikku lifted a hand nervously. "Can we help?" she asked. "I, uh, not to sound all ... whatever. But ... some of us have skills and experience with this kinda thing -- well, not like this, but -- we want to help, you know?"

Haku frowned deeply. This woman was serious trouble and he watched Aly closely, but didn't ask any questions.

Rikku chewed her lip. "I think ... I hate saying stuff like the ends and the means 'cause people abuse that to get away with all kinds of nasty stuff. But I think with spying, you kinda need to take that into account, you know? If people's lives are at stake, if there's dangerous stuff around, then information is powerful stuff and you need to get it."

"Spy when you need information that can't be gathered through normal means," Gavin finally said. "When it's important enough to risk a life by sending someone in to get that information. And isn't impossible to know how dangerous something will be until you get where you're going?"

Will took a deep breath.

"I think... I think that you need to think about why you're things instead of who you're doing it for. It can be wrong either way -- you can be against people who disagree with, or they can take over an organization from the inside." She looked away and stared off into the distance. "I think the important thing is to think about whether you feel what you're doing is right, and whether you're hurting anyone by doing it."

"I think it's the right thing to do when there's no other way to get the information, and when the information is worth at least the spy's life--to the spy, anyway, since they're the ones risking it," she said quietly, but firmly. "It's only too dangerous when the scales don't balance, and unethical when the spy uses the information to hurt people, or sells it to the highest bidder."

"Yes, it changes on who you report to. Just because someone is in charge doesn't mean that their motives are pure."

Inara had been doing a lot of thinking about this recently.

"Inara said it better than I could've," Anders said. "Although I gotta add, there are probably some times when the good the information can do outweighs the spy's life by a long shot, and then it's not even a question at all. But it's all in how that information'll be used, isn't it?"

He bit his lip, half-subconscious orange-tinted images flickering rapidly through his mind. "If you do what you do to, say, make sure good people are going to survive, then it's good. It's worth it. If you're gonna get planted somewhere to help wipe them out, not so much."

It was probably a dumb move, but he wasn't being very intelligent this morning (http://umbitch.livejournal.com/6046.html?thread=729758#t729758) as Zuko quietly slipped into the back of the class, a magpie sitting on his shoulder. His face was pale and drawn, his hand pressing against his chest where the wound didn't seem to want to stop bleeding. He wasn't staying, but he needed to make sure Aly was alright. Seeing she was, he quickly tried to slip away.

Rikku walked up to Aly after class, hesitantly. "I'm not provoking her," she said quickly. "I've been telling people not to. She's ... I think maybe she's kinda crazy, yeah?"
