Spies and Spying: Week 6. Period 1

Aly stood in front of the class looking thoughtful as they came in. 

"Over the past five classes, we've talked a lot about different ways to get information," she said.  "But we've never talked about what to do once you have the information.  In general, that's not the spy's job.  The spy simply retrieves the information and passes it up the chain of command.  It's the spymaster or the officer or the politician's job.  But things are rarely that easy, and none of you are actually spies."  She grinned.  "That I know of."

"So how do you know when to act?  How do you know when to act wisely?  When the goal is revolution, the object should only rarely be to just taunt the person in power or draw his attention to you.  You need a plan.  You need a clear objective, and you need to make sure you have as much information as possible before you act."

She raised an eyebrow.  "So take...oh, whatever possibility you wish to discuss and form a plan of action.  Decide what information you need, and how - using the techniques we've talked about - you'd go about getting it."

So, Gavin drew a happy face on a sheet of paper and held it up in place of one of his glances.

Inara chuckled and gave a little finger wave back when she didn't think Aly was looking.

Since they were being stealthy (really, it's true), he wrote the word Okay? and held it up all stealthy like.

She nodded, then pointed back, asking the same for him.

It took him awhile to answer this. Not because the answer was long or anything but because he decided to doodle himself, complete with stupid hair, stupid eyes and clothes that were way too big on his stick figure body.

He drew an arrow, wrote Me at the end of it and and nodded.

Inara studied the picture and became a bit worried that he was telling her he'd lost a lot of weight and had to wear someone else's clothes. It was possible she was now looking at him a little funny.

He turned it back around, looked at it and then wrote What?

She sighed and wrote out a short note. Whose clothes did you borrow?

I'm wearing my own clothes. He checked his shirt just to make sure. Yeah, these are mine.

Those are mine too. He added a line to the clothing and wrote Gavin's clothes.

It was hard to write out laughter so he just laughed instead.

You should come check for yourself.

Ignore that he almost spelled 'check' wrong. He's being stealthy.

Inara glanced around and figured Aly wouldn't appreciate if she checked in the middle of class.

It's a yes or no question. Or two of them.

Do I need to bring a measuring tape?

You could maybe measure me this weekend?

That was not a good pick up line.

He tapped his pen against his cheek.

I could try and cook something that's not cookies, wear my uniform (maybe) and you could measure me this weekend?

He'd try poetry next.

At least he was making an effort? She thought about that, and couldn't think of a real reason to say no.

Except that I don't know how tall you were before you started shrinking.

Yes. But maybe it's the rest of you that's getting shorter.
