Spies and Spying: Week 6. Period 1

Aly stood in front of the class looking thoughtful as they came in.

"Over the past five classes, we've talked a lot about different ways to get information," she said. "But we've never talked about what to do once you have the information. In general, that's not the spy's job. The spy simply retrieves the information and passes it up the chain of command. It's the spymaster or the officer or the politician's job. But things are rarely that easy, and none of you are actually spies." She grinned. "That I know of."

"So how do you know when to act? How do you know when to act wisely? When the goal is revolution, the object should only rarely be to just taunt the person in power or draw his attention to you. You need a plan. You need a clear objective, and you need to make sure you have as much information as possible before you act."

She raised an eyebrow. "So take...oh, whatever possibility you wish to discuss and form a plan of action. Decide what information you need, and how - using the techniques we've talked about - you'd go about getting it."

Inara glanced around and figured Aly wouldn't appreciate if she checked in the middle of class.

It's a yes or no question. Or two of them.

He laughed.

I'm not shrinking. You should still check. Not right now or anything.

Inara blushed for a completely different reason this time.

Do I need to bring a measuring tape?

He nodded but wrote something down anyway.

You could maybe measure me this weekend?

That was not a good pick up line.

Inara shot him a look.

Is that the best you can do?

He tapped his pen against his cheek.

I could try and cook something that's not cookies, wear my uniform (maybe) and you could measure me this weekend?

He'd try poetry next.

At least he was making an effort? She thought about that, and couldn't think of a real reason to say no.

Except that I don't know how tall you were before you started shrinking.

Hey, I'm not shrinking!

Now, he'd be checking after class.

I'm a tall boy! I have long legs!

She remembered. And look, more blushing.

Yes. But maybe it's the rest of you that's getting shorter.

He subtly tried to eye his arms. They looked all right.

You're the short one.

He's not suave.

She wasn't impressed.

I'm perfectly proportioned. You're the one who used to be all gangly.

He scratched his cheek.

You are. I'm still gangly! And lanky! I'm tall! I am not shrinking!

Inara's shoulders were shaking with laughter by this point.

If that helps you feel better, sure.

Oh my god, if he was shrinking, it would be bad.

Never wearing the leather pants again.

Mature.

Mind if I borrow them, then?

She'd just have to roll up the cuffs eight or twelve times.

Oh, that was mean. Because now he was staring very openly and getting mental images that wouldn't go away.

...no.

But he had to fight back.

I just won't wear pants at all.

Which was a very pretty thought, and Inara was not unaffected.

Isn't that illegal?

He smirked a little.

I'd wear my shorts. To workshops, to school events, around allll those people.

There would be a stampede. But they'd be long enough to be pants once your legs shrank some more, so you'd be decently covered.

He made a face at her.

I'm going to brush my hair tonight.

In a moment of pure maturity, she stuck her tongue out at him.

I thought I'd take a bubble bath.

He snickered and tried to cover it up with an exaggerated frown.

And then he read the note.

And then he dropped his pen.

And almost hit his head while trying to retrieve said pen.

I'm going to...exercise. Without a shirt.

He didn't think that topped a bubble bath though.

Inara smirked and relaxed back in her chair. It was a pretty picture, but she was definitely winning now.

Oh? What kind of exercise? Is shirtlessness obligatory? Because I was thinking of exercising with you...

She was officially evil, he decided.

The sweaty exercises. He was blanking on types of exercises! I think you should exercise with me too.

Like he'd say no to that.

She snickered.

I think we've got that covered already. Don't you?
