"So let's give a hand for our speakers, first up..."

"It doesn't matter whether you're a citizen in a small community or in a bigger nation," Roy started. "The responsibilities that come with it stay the same and while it might seem grander to be a nation wide hero, we each can only deal with what is right in front of us and that starts right here. You can change the world by protecting those around you and inspiring them to in turn keep the people around them safe. It is every citizen's duty to create and maintain a world that will enable those that come after you and spare them from the injustices that you might have to face today."

Peter eyed the Sheriff and moved slightly to the back of the class to avoid his notice. Just in case there were still hard feelings about that whole bribery situation.

"Could something as small as say, staying in school even if certain people want you to leave, count as that?"

Naminé raised her hand uncertainly. "You speak as though it's our duty to keep loved ones safe. But I haven't the ability for that. I can't fight. And there's one who needs to go and fight, who isn't safe at all, but it would be wrong to stop him. All I can do is hope."

River looked uneasy, but raised her hand. "What is your opinion on the correct choice of action when protecting people demands that you oppose the current government?"

"Citizenship," Steve began, "carries with it several responsibilities. We have to obey the law, pay taxes, not dodge the draft. But citizenship also carries the right to political participation, and it is therefore the duty of a good citizen to take advantage of this right. Don't just stand by and let others make decisions for you. Get involved. Ask questions. Write letters to your congresspeople. Once you're old enough, vote, for the love of God--if your nation has voting, that is. If not, your citizenship mileage may vary. As citizens of any nation, you have a privileged status that has been denied to a lot of people throughout history. Use it."

Naminé raised her hand, pleased to see her former Arts and Crafts professor. "Mr. Rogers, hello again. If we aren't citizens of any nation exactly, how do we become one?"

"Is citzenship during wartime different than during peace?" Peter asked. "How do you think one's duties as a subject change?"

Re: Second Speaker: Steve Rogers

Robin pondered, then raised his hand. "Sir, about the draft, what if the war in question is, well of questionable morality and motivation? What if you feel quite strongly that the war is wrong?"

River folded her arms. "The elected goverment may still chose to act in ways which risks the lives of the citizens."

Re: Third Speaker: (Hail to the Chief begins to play)

[identity profile] professor-lyman.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Two hundred and fifty years ago, or near enough," Jed began in a voice well accustomed to talking to crowds, "a group of men met in Philadelphia. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident,' they said, 'that all men are created equal.' Strange as it may seem, that was the first time in history that anyone had ever bothered to write that down. Decisions are made by those who show up."

He began to pace. "And in a world as diverse as ours, as varied as ours, as precious as ours, as fragile as ours, it is our right, our duty, our challenge and our distinct privilege to show up. To use our hands, our brains, our gifts to make this planet a little better a place to be than when we showed up. As students, as teachers, as politicians, as citizens of the world, we have been charged with this. Decisions are made by those who show up."

He smiled. "And history remembers them."

He peered around at the students. "Any questions?"

Robin was already getting an idea for this. He started scribbling down song titles.

After class River approached Dale. "Professor Cooper? I would like to report that my absence last week was due to my being an owl." She paused for a moment. "I guess I could have showed up but I had been out hunting all night."

Turtle's head titled a little at the new merit badges she'd gotten. "Um, Agent Cooper?"

Naminé approached Dale after class, a little uncertainly. "May we count this island or school as our community? I'm not sure I have any other."
