"So let's give a hand for our speakers, first up..."

[OOC: OCD is coming]

"It doesn't matter whether you're a citizen in a small community or in a bigger nation," Roy started. "The responsibilities that come with it stay the same and while it might seem grander to be a nation wide hero, we each can only deal with what is right in front of us and that starts right here. You can change the world by protecting those around you and inspiring them to in turn keep the people around them safe. It is every citizen's duty to create and maintain a world that will enable those that come after you and spare them from the injustices that you might have to face today."

Peter eyed the Sheriff and moved slightly to the back of the class to avoid his notice. Just in case there were still hard feelings about that whole bribery situation.

Roy might have lost an eye, but it hardly kept him from recognising the boy.

"Mister Pevensie," he spoke up. "Perhaps you could explain why you found it your duty to obstruct our local police force a few months ago."

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't call it obstructing so much as diverting their attention, sir," Peter said. "And it was so that a friend had a chance to escape from someone out to do him injury."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"And isn't that what a police force is for?" Roy asked him.

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"To be honest, sir, it wasn't a thought that crossed our minds. If we had used the time to explain the situation rather than act, our friend might have been hurt or killed," Peter said, not particularly apologetically. "It was better they stayed away."

Roy raised an eyebrow. "I believe you could have explained things to me faster than it took you to find the troopers."

"Could something as small as say, staying in school even if certain people want you to leave, count as that?"

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

"Depending on the situation, I suppose it could very well be," Roy said with a nod, wondering if this was Umbridge related.

Robin nodded thoughtfully. "Okay, good. Thank you sir."

Naminé leaned over to give the small frog a curious glance, before biting her lip and whispering, "It's ... it's safe here. If you're scared of being harmed."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] robinthefrog.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin gave her a grateful look. "I wasn't, but our new principal doesn't like amphibians."

"She doesn't?" She tilted her head at him. "Whyever not?"

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] robinthefrog.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know." he shook his head. "But she said we don't belong in school."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Naminé gaped. "That's ridiculous! Why should anyone object to amphibians in a school? Is there some better school for amphibians of which I'm not aware? Where else should you be?"

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Naminé raised her hand uncertainly. "You speak as though it's our duty to keep loved ones safe. But I haven't the ability for that. I can't fight. And there's one who needs to go and fight, who isn't safe at all, but it would be wrong to stop him. All I can do is hope."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He gave her a lopsided grin. "I suppose I tend to look at things from a soldier's point of view, but keeping someone safe doesn't have to involve fighting. There are enough people who never used violence and still contribute to their community in any way that they can."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Naminé smiled back. "In that case ... what can one person do, beyond hope? If they aren't a soldier, I mean."

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"What are you good?" Roy asked. "I know a girl who hasn't ever wielded a gun and yet she helps those who need it by making automail."

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I ..." Naminé stopped herself, uncertain that her abilities with memory could ever be a help and not a hurt. She cleared her throat. "I can portal between locations. I tried - when there were dinosaurs here - to find people who were stranded, so that I could move them to a safer place."

River looked uneasy, but raised her hand. "What is your opinion on the correct choice of action when protecting people demands that you oppose the current government?"

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"To move carefully and trust only in those who you know won't betray you," Roy said.

Re: First Speaker: Roy Mustang

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
River nodded. "Have to find and keep them."

[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com 2007-07-31 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"They're worth keeping close," he agreed, regarding River for a moment but not wanting to push. "And moving against your own government can be a life long commitment to make."

River just replied with another nod and an enigmatic smile.
