Library [07/14]

Dinosaurs were not part of the craze in her timestream where people brought extinct animals back through cloning. Thursday, however, had dealt with dinosaurs in her time inside fiction and didn't particularly feel like trying to negotiate with sharp teeth this time. So she packed up Friday and Pickwick, locked up the house, left a note for her housemates letting them know what was going on and where she was going and headed to the library. Friday would have been out of there and off to Mrs Bradshaw's in as much time as it takes to say 'I was in a long, dark, wood-panelled corridor', but the BookWorld was dealing with its own problems right now.

Fairly certain that the dinosaurs wouldn't be able to read, Thursday closed the doors up and put a note on the front saying 'open, knock or shout first', put Friday, his toys and Pickwick down where she could see them and set about trying to find out how exactly dinosaurs had shown up overnight without a fuss and how to get them to go away again.

Hermione comes to the library fairly early, greeting them all with "Dinosaurs?"

"They attempted to eat my horse!" he said, looking up. "They do not belong here."

"That's terrible!" she said, eyes wide and horrified. "Is everyone all right?"

"Trenor is safe in the garage. I do not think he is very happy, but he is uninjured," he replied with a brief smile. "I don't know if anyone else is, though." He suddenly recalled manners. "And I am Karal. Do you know, is there something we should be doing?"

"Hermione," she says. "Usually when this happens, we find any books we can on the subject, including ones about how they may have gotten here and how we might get rid of them." She thinks about this. "Or the number of a good paleontologist, maybe."

"I do not know what a palaeontologist is," he said. "But I can find books. I have some experience in researching."

"It's someone who studies dinosaurs," she says, automatically assuming he's not from here. "So you know how this library works? Want to help me find some more books?"

"I am somewhat familiar with the system, the dewey decimal one. And yes, please," he said, slumping a little with relief at having something he could do. "I would like that very much."

She waves for him to follow her to the section where she remembers seeing some books on this. "Hm. I suppose encyclopedias and the like could help, but hopefully there's something more specific to Fandom," she muses.

Karal happily followed her. "Yes, as interesting as these beasts might prove to be, I am not interested in becoming a palaeontologist. I simply want to know how to make them leave. Since they are here, it may be something endemic to the island that summoned them."

"You know, in this town, they could have come to life from drawings or landed here in a spaceship. I put nothing past this place," she says, stopping in the stacks and tilting her head to look through the titles. "I'd much rather somethng simple like a giant iceberg washed up onshore and melted very quickly."

This is your brain. This is your brain after a year in Fandom.

Karal gaped at her. His brain had only been here two months. It wasn't quite up to speed. "Truly?"

"Since I've been here, there have been mummies, trolls, dragons made of gelatin, things that stole voices..." she says with a sigh, and pulls a book from the shelf. "You get used to it."

"I guess that is something I can look forward to," he said ruefully as he inspected the books, sliding one free and opening it to the index.

"I've managed to avoid it by not going outside," she admits. "Did you see any on the way over here?"

"At least those are relatively tame?" Hermione tries. Just big. And with horns. "Where could they have come from?"

"Magic, do you think? I don't know too much about the other types used here, but I wouldn't be surprised at this point if someone just read the wrong thing and here they are," she says.

"You hear some things on the radio," she says. "I don't think people realize that it's not something to be toyed with, and anyone who woould use it in certain ways aren't responsible enough to use it at all, and I'm sorry, I seem to be ranting."

"Hopefully it's nothing like that," Hermione says. "I know it would make me feel better."
