Library [07/14]

Dinosaurs were not part of the craze in her timestream where people brought extinct animals back through cloning. Thursday, however, had dealt with dinosaurs in her time inside fiction and didn't particularly feel like trying to negotiate with sharp teeth this time. So she packed up Friday and Pickwick, locked up the house, left a note for her housemates letting them know what was going on and where she was going and headed to the library. Friday would have been out of there and off to Mrs Bradshaw's in as much time as it takes to say 'I was in a long, dark, wood-panelled corridor', but the BookWorld was dealing with its own problems right now.

Fairly certain that the dinosaurs wouldn't be able to read, Thursday closed the doors up and put a note on the front saying 'open, knock or shout first', put Friday, his toys and Pickwick down where she could see them and set about trying to find out how exactly dinosaurs had shown up overnight without a fuss and how to get them to go away again.

"I guess that is something I can look forward to," he said ruefully as he inspected the books, sliding one free and opening it to the index.

"It gives a lot of reasons to come to the library," she says with a smile, pulling another book from the shelf. Sighing, she asks, "Why can't they be a little more specific?"

"Because that would make things simple," he said, also taking another. "I do not even know what to look for." He ran his finger down the chapter list and sighed. "A tidy entry such as 'Dinosaurs, removal from Fandom of' would be helpful."

"Well," she says, leaning against the shelves. "What do you think could bring dinosaurs here like this? Maybe we should be expanding the search."

"The ones this morning were hunters, pack animals, so perhaps this is a convenient food source. Although," he frowned, "they are not supposed to be in this time, so they had to come from somewhere. I believe people would have noticed if they'd walked over the causeway, which means," he sighed, "it is probably magic. Can you create beasts from thin air?"

"Where I come from, you can Transfigure something, more likely, but you'd have to be very good to manage dinosaurs," Hermione says. "I'm not too sure about other types of magic around here. I'm sure it's possible."

"If they were created with magic, it means someone brought them here, deliberately, or it was an accident." He leaned back against the shelf, book held to his chest, staring at the floor. "I can't imagine what bringing them here would achieve, especially as it would have to have been at some significant cost."

"And I honestly don't know anyone that powerful at this school," says Hermione, thinking. "Msybe one. Maybe. But not as many as there seem to be."

After a moment of thought he laughed and shook his head. "Maybe they were here all along and no one noticed," he said, grabbing another book. "I think I will take these, see if there has been anything similar in the past. If it's happened before, a way to be rid of them must have been found." This felt eerily familiar to what was occurring in his world, a legacy of the past threatening the present. "Or there would not be an island here for them to invade now."
