Flight & Flying [Friday, second period]

Anakin didn't apologize for his behavior, you know, ever.

But he was noticeably more calm than he'd been the week before as the class met in the Danger Shop like he'd totally emailed them about, really.

"Today we're going to try something a little different," he said quietly, pointing to two motorcycle-esque machines hovering before him. "This is a swoop bike," he said, pointing to one, "and the one on the left is a speeder bike, the slightly newer model, which is also equipped with a laser cannon. Don't use the laser cannon, please. Both fly like the motorcycles of your world drive, but can get up to 400 kilometers an hour. That being said, you will be wearing helmets --" fortunately for the class, much more attractive than the Nubian ones from the previous week, "--and there are two different scenarios based on your level of skill. One is a desert planet with nothing to hit. The second is a forest moon with trees hundreds of meters tall."

He gave Luke a small smile. "Please don't hit a tree and explode. There'd be paperwork. Next week, we'll be meeting at my shuttle and doing some actual space flight. If you hurt my ship, I'll be unhappy. If you demonstrate today you don't have the maturity to fly responsibly, you won't be asked to come along." He stared hard at each student. "Questions?"

There really was nothing to see. Z went really really slow, then really really fast to see how fast this thing accelerated (the answer was 'very'). Then she did donuts. Then she went really really fast some more.

Then she got kind of bored with the lack of scenery.

John went really, really fast. The swoop bike was a fun ride, but the scenery got boring quickly.

Naomi opted for going at an average speed. There were a few times when she accelerated but she mostly stayed in the average range. She wasn't really impressed with the scenery though.

Isabel decided to stick with the desert. She started off slowish but by the time she finished, she was moving pretty damn fast.

Mel was PSCYHED! The controls on the swoop bike were practically the same as the hover-cycles back home.

Mel took the bike full blast over the desert showing remarkable control and ability.

"I've got to get myself one of these!" she whooped when she finished the scenario.

Johnny loved to ride his motorcycle and he rode often and he rode fast, so he knew he could handle this bike without a problem.

The swoop bike was easily handled and he zoomed through the desert; his control and dexterity were excellent.

The first thing Anders thought, lazily flying over a sand dune, was that taking a spill here would be really, really uncomfortable for a while.

Once he'd gotten the hang of the controls (and they were a lot less intimidating than the Nubian fighter's, that was for sure), he felt pretty safe about kicking in the acceleration. Hell, if he could do it on his Glider, he was probably safer doing it on something that had handlebars.

He started carving a series of hairpin turns just to test out the way it cornered -- the answer would be 'pretty nicely,' actually.

. . . and then the fear of sand in uncomfortable places started to sap the fun out of it, so he finally slowed down and stopped.

Not only wasn't there much to see, but Inara had just seen it a week and a half earlier, when flying in the simulation with Gavin. Feeling relatively safe once she got the hang of the controls, she wasn't afraid to push the speed more than usual.

Scenario 2

You're flying through the giant redwoods of California forests of Endor. The trees are huge and occasionally very close together.

Because Anakin doesn't want to cause his son all kinds of trauma, no one's shooting at you.

Beginner pilots should probably give this a pass, though.

Mel showed pretty good maneuverability on the forest run and at high speed. It was pretty much like dodging flying cars while being chased by her sisters the laws.

The speeder bike was awesome, no other way to put it. Johnny's maneuverability was highly maintained by his precise hand/eye coordination and he could be heard laughing as he worked his way through the forest in and around the big assed trees.

He wondered if he would get in trouble for torching any of them, because, you know, racing through a burning forest could be all kinds of fun. Save the fact that they are trees and therefore protected.

But how sweet is this race! Shut up, it's not a race but he was pretending okay?

Luke shot his father a slightly amused smirk, then climbed onto the speeder bike, slammed on the accelerator and whipped through the trees.

This was a lot more fun when Stormtroopers weren't shooting at him, it was true.

After class was over, John approached Anakin, clutching a turnip in his fist. He had a job to do for Fandom Chicken.

"We're really going into space?" He was sceptical, but had enough of a death wish with authority figures to risk being snapped at after last week's tense class.

Work sucks like a sucking thing that makes me work, and there's enough craziness going on IG that I figured an easy class makes everyone's life better. There are two bikes, so you can certainly fly in pairs if you'd like. Please don't crash and die too often, though it is the Danger Shop, so the scenario'll just reset itself.

Yo, Johnny is totally skipping class next week as I am going on vacation. He's going to DC for a Supercross convention. Feel free to give him detention or whatever when he gets back. Woot!
